Most of us already know this, but before hitting the trail, you should inspect the following:
Hoses
Tires
Belts
Safety equipment (Fire extinguisher, seatbelts, rollcage, winch line, etc..)
GREASE EVERYTHING!!!!
This could save you a lot of time and embarrassment, not to mention a long walk back to town.

guns/ammo
kids
wife

I have broke the "dont go alone" law to many times heh. I go with other people, but only my vehicle. I dont advise it unless you know the area and are prepaired to have to hike out if need be.

Few things not mentioned above: Spare tire, jack, TOOLS! You have got to have tools, and also, SPARES! I cary around quite a few spare parts with me in my cherokee, along with lots of tools. A few common parts to bring are the following:

1: U-Joints
2: Ignition module if you have electronic igntion, extra set of points if you are old fasioned
3: Some 14 guage wire (or around there, I have needed it before)
4: Fuel line
5: Vacuum caps (had a vacuum cap crack on me ont he trail, that sucked)

bah...got to go do some work, will finish list later.

I knew I missed some stuff last night, that's what I get for PUI (posting under the influence)
Also, a gas can is a good idea, as well as water, duck tape, bailing wire, and zip ties.

Allso in my case if i ever go mudding again, brake spoons! (found this out the hardway last trip, drove home with no brakes, having manual drums on all 4's has its disadvantages)

Ya might want to take your fire ext down from it's mount if it's been in the rig awhile. Then turn it upside down and bang it on your roll bar whatever a few times and then shake the dog Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley out of it. The powder packs down from vibration after awhile. Nothing worse than jumping in to save the day and the thing just releases propellent and no powder and goes...phhhfffttt. :(
Also causes a dramatic increase in pucker factor if it's a serious burn. ;)

Safety glasses and leather gloves.
First aid kit.
Flashlight.
Magnetic pick up thingy.
If going for a long trail ride, maybe a change of clothes. (Getting back in the rig smelling of gas is hell on the wife!)
Ivory soap; biodegradeable (see above).
1 or 2 MRE's.

Yeah, but I check it before any off road use, regardless of when I last checked it, plus, when you check the basics, you are more likely to see any other potential problems, and fix them early.

One thing I forgot, check your battery hold down! I had one dump into my alternator, ugly site, took a lot of baking soda to clean the mess up, not to mention having to buy a new battery.

ALWAYS bring extra Water. Hate getting out on the dry dirt and having nothing to drink. plus always handy when your rad springs a leak.

Thanks to a day of wheelin, blowing a bead, and having the dumb luck of somebody nearby having a tire machine, and the decency to help out, plus a suggestion from kyjman, TIRE IRONS, BRING TIRE IRONS!!!!

I didnt see black electrical tape. I allways have that there is a million uses for it, just like duct tape. cheap too!

I always carry the 4 spare axleshafts that fit my truck, and the necessary tools to install them. If you have 35s or bigger tires with a locker and still use stock D44 axles, be prepared to eventually mangle a shaft if you wheel hard. Spare driveshaft is a good idea, but you can always drive out with just one good one unless you are doing something x-treme.
JB weld is another very good thing to have on hand for makeshift repairs to just about anything.

Check those fan bolts! Its no fun having a fan thru the radiator out on the trail..

-Spare oil/fluids, enough to fill the crankcase, trans, t-case, or diff in case of a major leak or hole in the oil pan (that's why you might need the JB weld)

We fixed my buddy's 79 golden eagle chero with JB weld when a rock decided to tear a hole in the pan of the th400. We got home after mooching enough atf from everyone who came by on the trail..

-bailing wire (cuz you aren't a real jeeper without it holding something together on your rig) I am currently using it in the following locations: shift linkage, battery tray, exhaust pipe.

-Spare fuel pump & hose w/ clamps
-spare electrical stuff (wire & connectors)
-Extra Fuel
-a jacket, in case you have to spend the night, or wrench in the dirt/rocks... also a good idea to throw it over the winch cable during a recovery effort

a flashlite w/ spare batteries/bulbs even if you THINK its only a day trip..

Secure everything that is in the cab/ passenger area. Toolboxes/ spare parts can become blunt instruments capable of savage bodily harm in a rollover situation

One thing for comfort is to make sure that your shifter boots are all properly sealed (for personal comfort.)
