On my Radio Shack Hand held, most folks can't hear me. I can hear them fine.

AZFRANK was one of the exceptions, when I talk AZFRANK hears me loud and clear.

What gives? What can I check?

The radio may be off frequency. If your radio is misadjusted, and AZfrank's radio is off by a similar amount, then he will hear you much better than other folks. First thing to do is take the radio to a lake and throw it in. Then got to wallyworld and buy a radio for the truck. No, just kidding here.

Have the radio checked for proper alignment. Any tech can hook it up to a frequency counter and check it out for just a few bucks.

Do you have an external antenna for the truck? That built-in antenna is really no good for use from inside a vehicle. A magnetic mount antenna that you pop on the roof when you need it will really help a lot. Speaking about that builtin antenna, is it extendable? Some come with an antenna that you are supposed to pull out to full length.

… As usual Rande is correct. If your hand held has the quick removable antenna you can buy an adapter for the standard SO 259? type antenna fittings. 12 volt radios will talk louder at 18 volts. Any higher voltage might blow some of the caps though I have gone to 24 Volts..
