I have 2 questions.
Fist I am looking for a receiver hitch for my 77 J-10. I cant find a source for these. All the parts stores look at me like you want it to fit what  Do you guys know of a good an fast source for one.
Also I need a new fuel sending unit for my tank, I get the same responce on it too. Is there and online source for it and a new locking ring also?
Thanks

I've checked on receiver hitches for J's also and haven't found one yet. This comes up now and then and I believe that very few, if any, have gotten a made to fit model for a J. However....there have been some alternatives:
1) Seems a few people have found a "universal kit" type hitch that is well, "one size fits all" or something. I believe I've heard CostCo carries them...which serves me no good....none around here. But, if anybody knows where else to find these, please let us know!
2) I've also heard of something like a Mitsu Montero Sport hitch supposedly bolting up....though the ones I've heard of were the more rounded type....modern goofy looking things. But, again, if anybody can shed light on "other vehicles" that might bolt right up, we could all just go in and order one of those.....any info on that, gang?
3) There is a bumper bolt on "receiver only" type that will bolt onto a step bumper type.....they just use the bumper as the frame mounts though, so I don't know what to think about them. Most places should carry those. I've got one on a Honcho and no complaints, but ain't pulled any stumps with it yet either! :D
4) There are a few fellow members that make "custom"(and kick butt really) bumpers, some which have receivers built in....any links to those, gang? They are pricey, but well built and solid!
Anyway....sorry I can't give you a simple answer to that, but that's a little light on it...maybe others can fill in more. I'd love to find a simple bolt on full hitch myself!
Take care....

Saw one the other day at Tractor Supply. Supposed to fit all full size American made trucks from the mid 60s all the way to the 90s? It bolts together, and I would guess that it would have different configurations to fit such a variety of trucks. My thought was to see if it would fit my Gladiator and then weld the joints together after installation. I can tell you from experience that bolt together hitchs will work loose from the constant motion of a trailer. Any thoughts?

Green Giant- had a friend do exactly what you're thinking. Bought a universal-type hitch that had bolts that secure the sliding part of the adjuster. He put the hitch up to his frame rails, tightened it down and welded it in place. Been on his rig for years now with no signs of weakening.

Ok, I have wondered about the universal ones. I used one on my Ramcharger a few years ago. It fit, but just wasnt quite right. Never thought of the welding it after wards though. That might help.
Ok how about the gas tank sending unit????? Any thoughts???????

I wouldn't weld the sending unit. :D

U-Haul told me they can get me a class III hitch for a J20 in 10 - 14 days, but they have not yet told me how much it would cost. I'm sure it's not cheap.

I got one for my 78 Cherokee from U-Haul in like 3 days (2 years ago). Didn't even have to move the spare tire bracket mount. I have a factory one sitting on my garage floor, but shudder to think what shipping would run. Shoot me an email later -
BTW - Go the lights late last week and thanks again.

Green Giant:
Hadnt planed on welding the sending unit, lol. Although it would solve most of my problems with this truck. Thanks for the site to check.
Turtlejoe:
Glad they made it. Isnt the frame differant on a Cherokee in the back? If not is it a class 3, and in usable shape? If so see if you can find out shipping. I need to get a hitch on this thing, bought another truck and have to run to Colorado to pick it up.

Are you serious, an XJ hitch works? I just sent a XJ to the Junk yard that still had the hitch on it. It has already been scaped, my luck. Thanks for the info.

Yes, indeed, J-truck frames ARE different widths than Wag/Cherries, though I have not checked a WT Cherry up close to see. Wag/Cherry Hitches are not a problem to find....it's for a J-truck that they tell you S.O.L. Also....I don't know how an XJ hitch fit on, unless it was designed wider than normal. I had an XJ, 84 GW, and a J10 at the same time once.....thought of putting the GW class III on the J10.....nope, frames are different widths. Looked under the XJ and the GW hitch wouldn't fit that either....the XJ "frame"(frame section actually since it's unibody) was narrower than the GW. Thus, there were 3 different widths, so a "custom" frame for any one, would not likely fit any of the other 2. I'd like to see that XJ hitch....but if it's on a wag, it still would most likely NOT fit a J-truck as they are still different widths in the back.
Anyway....sorry to add that bit, but SJ-wagon hitches are not a problem to find...J-trucks are...that's why this post was started, and why this topic comes up from time to time....we're still looking! smile.gif

I've been looking for a J truck hitch as well, with no luck.
I can help you with the sending unit, I believe. Raybuck lists two different ones in stock. They run something like 25 to 45 depending on which one. Hopefully one of those would work.

You can give up on finding a hitch, I searched high and low, called about every hitch maker around and was either told they don't make them anymore or I did not know Jeep made a truck kind of comments. Sterling makes a rear bumper that they will add the receiver to for $90. I bought the bumper but thought I could get a hitch and that was a big mistake. What I have done is buy the receiver tube from Northern Tool and welding up a super hitch! The tubes come in lengths from 6" to 4'.
As for the sending unit contact BJ's http://www.bjsoffroad.com/bj2.html
Brent will fix you up. Tell him you are in the IFSJA and get a discount.

Cool!!!! thanks for the info.
Looks like it will be hitch building time, I have a place up north of me that will custom make a hitch for me for about $125. I was just hoping to find a ready made one.

when we had the 79 j20 my dad built an incrediably strong hitch for it, and since we dont have the 79 anymore the hitch is for sale, like previously stated, wont fit on wag/cherokee, i tried, but not sure if the j10 and j20 frames are the same width or not. let me know.

I guess I'm lucky that my J-Truck came with what appears to be a factory hitch. I wouldn't have thought it would be so hard to find a hitch for one of these things, well I guess it is the Jeep that like 90% of people never heard of... :(

Drop Brent a line from BJ's OFFROAD (http://www.bjsoffroad.com/bj2.html). He lists the sending units avail for 62-85 trucks but all having the same p/n? Doesn't seem likely since the early ones are top mount and the later ones side mount but you might ask about.

OJTDJPR - have you sorted out which way you're going to go on the hitch? From what's been said here, my hitch won't fit on the J-truck. Drop me a note at work or home.
