I'm assuming the v-8 was the standard and the I-6 was the option. Is that the case?

AFAIK the J20's was sold with either the 258 six, 360 and 401 V8. I don't know about the 304 V8. What was the standard engine and what was the options, I'm not sure about. My J20 came new with the 258 I6 bolted to a T18/D20 combo.
But someone on this Forum surely know.

The 258 was always the base engine, once they started using it, and the 360 was the typical V8 of choice, again, once they started using it. The 401 was always strictly optional, as was the 360. In the later years it was far more common to see the 360's than the 258's but the 258 was still the base model engine.

I believe they stopped using the 6 in 3/4 tons after AMC got Jeep from Kaiser. Over where you're at, however, that may not be the case. A lot of the Jeeps made in/for other countries had different standard options.
Of course I could be wrong, smile.gif

My J20 was originally sold as a new truck in Sweden and later imported into Norway. It was build in the US. I think most of the J series sold in sweden were sold with the 258 engine. In Norway I have never seen a J20 originally sold new, just some Wagoneers and Cherokees.
