What kind of motors can be put in a 89 gw?
I was wondering, I see someone had a 327(older fsj)...
for instance will a dodge 318 work, chevy 350,400 or 327...(I don't care about f*rd junk..
Just wondering, There always motors for sale in various places, and I have a 350 sitting in my garage extra for me' plow, I know advanced adapter sells all kinds of adapters.. but I was wondering if there waere any that were "Plug and Play" without too many "band aids", machining , welding ...etc..
the way it sound alot's possible with the fsj. maybe?
Just wondering
thanks

If you use a Chevy 327/350/400 with a Chevy trams and xfer case with the right drop it should go smooth. I don't think I would go with a 327 Rambler at all. There seem to be a lot of 360's and 401's out there, so maybe get one rebuild it and pop it in.

There is no substitution for cubic inches. How big is your cutting torch. :D I've seen some nice SBC conversions. However, the AMC 360-401's are the easiest.

There would be no other makes that would bolt in, without major modifications. If I was to want to replace a AMC 360 with a different make the first choice would be a Dodge engine as the trans in your wag is already a Chrysler trans in a AMC casing, (do not think I would go with the 318, I would go big) You would need to have the trans recased to a Chrysler caseing that will bolt to the motor of your choice, and it would still bolt up to your T-Case. This could all be done without expensive adapters. Once that is all done you will have motor mount, electrical, radiator issues to contend with. I do not feel it is a very practical swap but hey everyone has to have their own ideas and rigs so why not. I would be more inclined to leave it a 360 and call it good. Of course I have transplanted a few weird combo's into FSJ's in the past, anything is possible. All that is needed is a good imagination, money, time, mechanical skills, and most important be able to lie, this skill is needed above all else. Lieing is very important because #1 you will need to convince yourself it is worth the trouble, #2 Wife comes out and asks how is it going? GREAT!! this has got to be answered with convincing conviction and certainty and be audible through clenched teeth, #3 Be able to explain why it is costing 5 times as much as first thought and taking three times as long, convincing her it is not your fault it is the unforseen that is creating the hangup. ;)

nice thought on the the "lie"....
that's pretty much all I needed to know...
I figured it wouldn't be easy, so...sounds like it's a 360.. I don't ned a new engine I was just wondering, like I said there are always 350's, 318's for sale but you never see a AMC 360 for sale(never hurts to have a spare)... hey just thought i'd ask, so i can evacuate the thought from my mind...
thanks,take care
