OK, I admit...I've been driving newer, warrantied vehicles for the last 10 years which seems to have purged some of my mechanical knowledge. My recent acquisition of "Heep" is making me painfully aware of my mechanical shortcomings.

When I turn the wheel 1/2 turn in either direction the P/S squeals. I can still go lock-to-lock, just without much power assist. The pump has a dual belt pulley but only 1 belt. It doesn't look like there's room to run a second belt.

Thanks for the help!

Uh...it's "Jeep." Save the epithets for the others brands. You'll learn to cherish it.
Anyway, welcome.
PS sqeal: first thoughts after a recent PS nightmare-
1) Belts
2) Heard that sound also when steering box leaked keeping PS fluid permanently low.
You have any leaks?

Here's the story on "Heep": I was in a situation where I needed a second vehicle. A very well respected and beloved neighbor of Mexican birth had this GW and knew of my situation and offered to trade the GW in exchange for some remote control cars for him and his son. Mr Perez has a very thick accent and whenever he mentions the GW his pronounciation of "Jeep" sounds like "Heep". Whenever I've had the hood up on the GW in my driveway, Mr Perez would drop what he was doing to come over to see if I needed help, once even after midnight.
I have since moved from that neighborhood, but I stay in weekly (sometimes daily) contact with the Perez family and he still asks if the "Heep" is running OK.

I'll check the belts and powerwash the steering box ASAP and report back. Thanks for the tip.

Pete

Ahh, "Heep," non-derogotory. Thanks for the origin. Actually I wasn't all that serious.
And yes, have no delusion about it: you WILL spned all your money on it gladly...
