Has anybody installed manual hubs in a later model GW? I have an 86 w/ a np 229(?)and auto front hubs. Would installing the front hubs and leaving them unlocked for normal driving help fuel mileage at all? in theory it would, since they fully disengage the front axle, but maybe i'm talking out my bum. my wife allowed me to buy a replacement wag with MUCH lower miled than any i have had so far, but with the promise that we would keep it for a long time. can't argue with that, but i would love to make it run a little cheaper! thanks

You mileage increase will be minimal. You also risk the chance of bumping the vacuum switch for the 4 wheel drive and blowing the internals of you case. The hubs must be locked for this case to be used in 4 wheel drive. The design of the case doesnt leave much room for error on this. I dont run a front drive shaft on mine(my case is trashed) and I didn't notice any real gains in mileage.
