i have 79 j10 258, after sitting for a day or two the truck is very hard to start, i have to pump the gas 30-40 times all while cranking on the starter. After starting everything is fine, and the problem does not exist if i drive it everyday. Any thoughts?

The first thing I would check is the accelerator-pump. Remove air-cleaner and look down carb while hitting the throttle.(not running of course) There should be a jet of fuel squirting down the throat of carb. If not then check if float bowl is empty. If there is fuel in bowl then go after the accelerator circuit.(plugged,etc.)

My 83 360 is doing the same thing right now. I assume two things:
1: The choke ain't working at all.
2: The acc. pump must not be putting out much, else she'd be hydrolocked after all those pumps.
Sounds like time for a carb rebuild!
One final thought: A bad engine ground can make it hard for the plugs to light off.

Is your float bowl going dry? Maybe you have to crank it so much because the pump is filling it up.

everything seems to be inorder with the acc. in carb, float seems to have gas, this problem still exsits after I replaced carb few months back. Is it possible that i might be losing vacumn(is that spelled correctly?) in the feed, return or vent lines between tank and carb then requiring me to fill the lines before she fires????

jeeptruck,
I had the same problem with mine, if it sat for a couple of days, I would have to get out and pour a little gas in the carb to get it to start. It did not seem to have much pressure in the fuel line, the clear fuel filter would only be about 1/4 full when it was running. I just put in a in-line electric fuel pump ($29 from NAPA) and by-passed the stock pump. Now it fires up on the first turn of the key. I also ran the fuel line away from the engine to keep the gas cooler.
Maybe this will work for you.

Did you confirm you ARE getting the squirt of gas down the carb throat when the accelerator is pumped?
