After trying to modify and graft the old wiring to my aplication I decided it would be much easier to start fresh. My new wiring harness was sitting on the front deck today! Complete underdash and front to back Looks Great. My 14 year old is looking over the instructions. He wants to rewire it, I will just have to check everything, but I think he can do it! Looks that easy..............We shall see. All wires are GXL Flame and Oil resistent wire. 134.00 to the house.

I got it from these guys Wiring Harness (http://www.itsasnapwireandcable.com/new_page_6.htm)

Joe, I have had a few setbacks.............mainly with work. They actually want me to work EVERYDAY!!! I have less time than I was supposed to. Now taking over the Marquette Route has even cut into my garage time even more. I might add I do not LIKE YOUR TOWN!!! Was the City Planner sniffing GLUE!?

Thanks for the wiring info.
My '77 has had PO's installing CB's, trailer brake panels, and various other "splices" into the harness.
Will call tommorrow and get one coming. Hope they have something for a 1977 J20.

Keep us posted on the install. I will be watching the thread as I am in need of some rewiring as well, just can't justify the cost right now, when so many other upgrades are some much cooler!

WOW!

Tell us more!LOL don't you have a STAIN to remove off your driveway to keep the Yuppies in your neighbourhood happy.....................Ya Know if you were toilet trained you would not have that problem. tongue.gif

I will post the results and the ease or not of using this harness. However looking at it and going over the instructions I can't see using this being a problem. For the Price.........I am very pleased with what I recieved. Jason (Bentpushrod) rewired a Comando with it and he said it was GREAT! and easy to install.

Especially that bakery loading dock!
Back to truck wiring, i don't know if you ever had this problem, but my J10 collects snow under the tail light housing from the rear whells throwing the white stuff up there. this snow sometimes forms an ice ball around some previously exposed wires. It eventually pulled out the grounding line, killing all those lights. Something to consider when wiring the back end. ANd don't forget you license plate light!

Are the wires themselves labeled to where they go?

Looks like a pretty good deal for a genaric harness,
also looks like it will take some time to sort
slice, route and add all the connectors.

Make sure the 14 year old can crimp properly and
given enough time he should be OK.

Mike D.I am looking to do this with no splices, I do not think it will be neccessary.

How do you order from Snap and TPI? Do you just call them or do they actually have distributors?

Crazy_Jeepman

I have ordered stuff from TPI........Gauges, but the harness I bought off eBay, I believe this guy is a distributor for TPI

it is almost a forgone thing, when you run in to
a molded on connector that there is no good
way to to other than keedping the origional
(Dizzy connector for example)

I am sure you know what you are getting in to,
but it is a lot of work to install one of these
haneses. Just so those on the list don't start
thinking this is a plug and play solution.

The reproduction harnesses Zack has are much cleaner
and faster to drop in but the price is much higher
also, either way a full rewire is a pain (genaric in time, reproduction in $'s)

Mike D.Well I go into these things with the attitude that, Can't be done is not an option.
Any Plug I can't match I will replace with one that I can. They sell male & female plugs of every configuration every day. Anyone that would even consider rewiring a rig should realize it is more than a weekend plug wire and tuneup project, being able to make changes and ingenuity will be the most valuable tools. Therefore serious thought and consideration should used, if one is up to it or not. While I don't spare the expenses on building my rig I still expect value for my $$$$. With that being said, the reproduction wiring harness and the prices  ..................Not in this life time.

The other option which is ~the same work as the genaric
harness is to go though the stock harness and rebuild
replacing as needed with new wire /terminals as
needed, unless the harness had a melt down, this
us uaually the route I personally would go.

These guys have most all the stuff needed :
http://www.waytekwire.com/ pretty much everything
from the flex conduit, wire (good stuff Packard )
to the terminals.

Zack is looking for some articles for the magazine, your project would be perfect! Take lots of pics. I'd like to rewire mine someday too, I can learn alot from your progress, mine's a J-10 too!

I'm game, tell me more (I missed the link) do they make just a simple 10-12 wire harness for us older rig folks?

Less Wires for Tad! (http://www.itsasnapwireandcable.com/zz-6_roadster_panel.htm)
Price more or less remains the same. The extra circuts I have I will just tuck out of the way in the event I can use them for something else later.

CJM, I have researched wiring harnesses for years. This is the one I chose. Can't beat it for price and quality and blows Painless Wiring out of the water.

What controls are you going to use for your winch Hydro systems?

Winch............I am looking at electric selinoid control, but I know very little about that, except that buying the wrong setup can be costly. I have a buddy that is up on all the hydraulic stuff, when I am ready for that I will get his help on it. Though I do have the valve banks off the wrecker, if all else fails.

This is a good thread. I have a dozen or questions about the harness. I looked at the website but couldn't find anything on the harnesses...course I ain't too smart. But a couple of questions pops into my simple mind...1. will the connectors that are supplied with the harness plug into the J10's connections? 2. Did you specify the number of circuits you needed? 3. Did the harness come with the fuse block? Wiring is the one thing that really baffles me...I'm an old mechanical type and if the light don't come on when I flip the switch it's :banghead: .
