I want to completely bypass the starter solenoid altogether to see if there is something grounding me out in the new one that I bought the other day. Can I make a 4 guage test circuit with a quick disconnect in it and just run it from the positive terminal on the battery to the terminal on the starter? Anyone know of a reason this is not doable or know of a better way?

Should work. I would disconnect the ground from the batter, run the cable to the wire and then connect the ground to see if it turns over. (Should avoid a big spark).
It is easy to test the starter silinoid. Apply 12 volts to the ign post (closest to the battery side of the solinoid). Use a volt meter to see if the starter post has 12 volts.
