I received this email and thought I would pass along the info.
While this discusses the installation of a modern Duramax into a earlier GM vehicle,
I am sure the same tips and tricks could be used to swap a Duramax into a FSJ

##################################################

The new Duramax Diesel Conversions book is ready!

The Duramax 6600 diesel engine can be easily tuned to produce more than 500 horsepower at the rear wheels,
while delivering 25 miles per gallon at 75 miles per hour in a 5,000-lb vehicle.
Only a modern diesel engine can achieve results like this.
In addition to appearing in several magazine articles, the conversion produced for this project series has drawn praise
and compliments from nearly everyone who has seen it, and certainly from all those who have ridden in or driven the truck.

We're sure you will be pleased with your own Duramax conversion.

The 1989 Chevy K1500 featured in this book was the very first privately owned 1988-98 C/K powered by a Duramax.
The actual mechanical details, wiring considerations, and background information presented here
will help you produce a high-quality conversion of your own, and for the least amount of money.

This color laser printed 60-page bound volume contains 104 images and diagrams covering what you'll need to know when installing
a Duramax 6600 diesel engine and Allison 1000 automatic transmission into a 1988-98 classis C/K GM pickup truck or Suburban.

So could you put a diesel engine into a Jeep. What all would you have to do to get one in.

I have not done this type of conversion, so I do not know all the details.
What I have done, is study this topic to death.
I can sadly say, I know as much as any man alive without ever having lifted a wrench.
I hope and pray that my fortunes will turn around and I will perform such an operation someday.

The purpose of my original post was to offer the information to the purchase ($90 bucks sounds steep) of a book from an expert who has performed this type of swap.

If you have an extra $90 bucks, buy his book, study, learn and then start swapping!

Jim has proved this fact in a Chevy Suburban.

My thoughts are, if he can do in a Burb, than I can do in a FSJ!
OOO YEAH!!!

This was tried over on The M715zone. (http://www.m715zone.com/Pnuke/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=7844&highlight=duramax)

There was trouble fitting the cooling. Rumor has it that GM is releasing a 4.9L V6 Duramax for 2007. This may be a much better fit.

Hack, chop, plumb and wire. Same as any other swap with some diesel things added. Yes, diesels fit into Jeeps quite well.

But the question is why a duramax? Banks likes them for some odd reason. Still I am weary of any engine with that track record. Props on your research! This does sound like a book worth reading. Pretty well put together to include all of the pertinant imformation. Maybe one day. As for now I am weary of that motor.

FWIW and just to confirm, I routinely knock down 22mpg highway (@ 75mph) in a stock '03 Duramax Diesel. I may be tempted just to glean any tips on how to eek out 25mpg at 75mph.

I have a 1996 GMC Suburban 2500 with a 454 in it (with a Banks kit on it, headers, exhaust and intake) and I am going to do a Duramax swap in it, mostly for fuel mileage.... some day I will get this 'book' -- 60 pages, color copied, not much of a 'book' but if it tells me exactly how to do it, it would be well worth it...

to the point that makes you wonder why AMC or Chysler never persued it!!:banghead:
