I found a guy that wants to sell a 79 Wag. He said it has 8 lug axles stock with a 360 auto. He also said he thinks I used to belong to a fire department. Has anyone ever heard of a Wag that came stock with 1 ton running gear?

Well believe it or not! Maybe some of you will be a little open minded next time eh. LOL This thing is a beast. I have never seen one of these things, but it will be mine.

It's a 79 Cherokee 4 door with a 360 and auto.
The front is a Dana 44 and the rear is either a Dana 60 or 70 the rear end is huge.
It only has 108,000+ miles and the grand total......$500!!!!
This is really a needle in a haystack. Sorry I am so gitty, but ya'll understand. I am already planning lift, tires, and lockers. Lets just hope I get some sleep tonight.

No the guy is suspose to send me pics in a few days. I asked him to check about the 8 lug thing when I was on the phone with him, cuz he wasn't sure. But it was for sure 8 lug.

Never heard of this. I doubt it left the factory with 8 lug axles, but perhaps the fire department had the dealer do the conversion? Most likely done at a shop.

it could have been a special order wag. however, 3/4 or one ton axles were not available at the dealership unless it was a j20.
if it does in fact have 8 lug axles, my bet is someone swapped in the axles.

I'll bet somebody saw more than 5 and just thought they saw 8. Prolly has six like all the rest.

Check it out yourself- I personally know one waggy owner with D60's installed as a dealer option. There have been several discussions on this board about these elusive rigs. The consensus is that they never came from the factory this way, but that some dealers modified a few at buyer's requests. Good luck- let us know what you find!

Very cool,
Looks like a custom conversion. The wheelbase is stretched. Wonder what it has for a rear axle?
Now you need to 60 it has a 44 or 60 up front

It has a 44 up front and a 60 or 70 in the rear. It's 19 feet long.

This is definnitely not a factory FSJ. Looks like a streched Cherokee WT with 4 doors, very cool. Looks like it has been streched about 3 feet. Custom body is way more interesting than the 3/4 ton axles.

No question it is custom work. Kind of reminds me of a FSJ answer to the Suburban. Have you measured the wheelbase? I am wondering if they didn't use a J20 frame/axles and weld a WT Cherokee rear to a waggy (you can see a slight fit issue behind the rear door). At any rate, it is a great find and well worth the money (FSJ brush guard is worth more than $100).

Even if you don't want it buy it and post it for sale here. You'll be surprised at how much you would make!

Yep, a definite custom. A really, really cool custom. I don't care what you have to to, but you need to buy it. Trade your girlfriend/wife if you have to. She'll understand. Or not.

Cool, looks like a Waggy welded to a Chero, just like Zack's creation. I'd like to see pics of where the two meet and see how well that's done. For $500 it's gotta be a great deal if it's all good and solid

Excellent freaking find. Well executed version of the Long-Trac, and none of the headaches involved. Looks like they cut a two door through the door openings at the floor and roof, and grafted it to the 4 door. They did a beautiful job on the rear doors from what I see. Believe me I know, doing it right now for the crew cab. The roof line came out excellent as well. That thing is a people hauler with the 3rd row seat, or pull it out and go on a 2 week elk hunt with all the amenities.

It has a 12 foot wheel base and it's 19 feet long. I don't think it is on a J20 frame. I am going to have it picked up Friday, cuz it is to big to fit on my car trailer. I will be sure to send ya'll plenty of picks. I want to look at the way it was done or if it was a foreign built thing.
I am going to get the info from the guy of the previous owner to get more history on it.

FSJeeper: Cal City is just north of Mojave Ca. off I-58.

I'd love to hear the history on that truck it you find out. That is definitely a vehicle Jeep should have built.

Notice that the rear doors are square on the bottom rear, not like the Australian J20 crew cabs which are just Wagoneer rear doors bolted on.

OMG, that thing is awesome. You should post pics of the frame once you get it.

I don't have a FSJ anymore, but I want another in a future. My fiancee would like to get back into showing horses eventually, and I think a stylin' stretched Wag like that would be the perfect horse trailer hauler/family event rig. Dayum.

That thing is about as far from factory as you can get, but it's still cool...just not from the factory.

If I had that my poor wife would have to deal with TWO really big Woody's! Yes, as you can tell, I have penis..Err umm wagon envy!
That thing looks so freakin cool it is not funny! I think the best thing about it to me is that, wham, and there it is. I never thought about doing one that way nor have I heard any one else talk of doing one that way. Once you see it ya kinda say to yourself, Hummm, self, why the he!! didn't goldhammer or somebody else that's capable do this before?
IMHO, that is nit only the find of the year, but, at 500.00 it is the steal of the year.
What would ya call it? A Cheroneer, or a Wagajo ( pronounced wagahoe)? Never the less, great lookin truck!

He "said"it has 8 lug axles stock So, this guy actually had a "factory" wag with eight lug axles. I think it is the most rare and unusual "factory" Jeep I have ever seen and you should pay him $5,000 instead of $500 ;) I guess my scepticism shows after going to a lot of trouble and spending a lot of time going to look at rigs that don't turn out quite as the owner described. Have fun with it!

The dash pad says Cherokee. Suspect that they took a 4 door chero and grafted the 2 door on. I thought about it then saw Zack's and figured too much work. So I go and do a crew cab instead, go figure..... Run the vin and find out what it started as when you get her home. Would love to see inside the rear doors, how they did the floor and roof. For sure a steal at the price. Ya done good, and you suck big time-LOL

sgtswole
04-12-2006, 06:36 AM
When I ran the VIN it comes up with "79 J20" I have the ladie's name that owned it in the 90's. She lives about 25 miles away so I going to see if I can get ahold of her to get some history.
