View Full Version : So whos got really good before and after pics?

With all these recent 'post your pics' threads, I've been seeing a lot of sweet looking FSJs. I'm just wondering, out of all of those, what they started out like. Has yours always been clean and you've just maintained it well for the last 20 years? Did it just need some TLC to get it into DD shape? Did it start out as a total POS?
If you don't have photos, you can just paint a mental before picture. I know with mine, and I'll post pics this weekend, it wasn't junk, but wasn't exactly a trailer queen either. I'm still in the process on it and would like to see some photos of other efforts for inspiration.

I have been sandblasting and repainting my company's '48 foot semi flatbeds. I just blasted number 8 out of the fleet of 15 today. I started Jan. 1st, so I still have a month left.
So till then, I'm pretty much just a lurker... Goin to bed now. Need my strength for painting! The worst is all the supports underneath. Each and every one gets epoxy and paint. It takes about 12 hours to do epoxy, paint the trailer in blue, and the wheels in white.
Take Care Todd. My Chero is still sittin low. I'm really wanting to elevate it with one of your kits, but still will be a while.

I've had her for a few months... She has a 401 TH400 with 3.07 gears... I trimmed the rust over the rear fenders and cut off the rockers and made the roof rack, bumpers, raised it a few inches... rhino grill... (yes before David Stacey) My Dad gave her to me and I have invested about $600 is all... I need to finish the winch (the motors is messed up) fix the rockers... replace the tires... if I go any bigger than the 31" on it I need to replace gears... I need to lower the back a bit... want to keep the low center of gravity for going fast after coyotes... and a few other things... so did I ruin her? or what?

Carey you should show that great rig off at the CFSJA meet and greet on Feb 18, details under 'events' link on http://www.cfsja.org/
I don't have a before pic handy, but started off clean, saggy, and stock with motor issues, ended up as shown in the avatar. Now it is more faded and dented but taller and far more capable off-road and with the entire drivetrain swapped out and all but the tcase rebuilt.

It was kind of a "decoy"; i.e. a police-officer sees that on the back, and might think the normal 37" tires I run are not all that big... smile.gif
Actually, I have mounted a 37" Goodyear MT on that carrier, but the 325/85-16 XML's might be a *little* heavy, despite my reinforcement (they weigh 150lbs/each when mounted). I have gone from those ultra-wide 10" rims with 2" of backspacing to some factory Ford 16"x7" rims with about 3.5" of backspacing, which will work much better on the trails around here. I will have pictures of that setup after Sunday's run.
Normally, I run the spare flat in the cargo area, and usually leave the carrier bare.

This is a modest build compared to what some of you guys have going on, but I'm proud of her. Base housing was not happy about what I did to the driveway. You gotta consider that regulations forbid doing any vehicle maintenance other than changing tires and batteries and jumpstarting. I once had to see my first sergeant because I was completely parting out an XJ in the driveway. :D

I think my community association would frown on the driveway shot.

No real rust/bondo that I've found...let's see how long the Iowa DOT and thier salt speuing minions let that last this winter!
Slapped a set of 33x12.5x15's on some beater chromies that first night. Making good progress on what was a complete gut job interior, and the usual list of basic "must DO's" (clutch, total underhood rewire, u-joints...the list goes on)

I let her have the garage between the time I got Herc running and the time I picked up a friend's '85 Power Ram parts rig. It was 4 days. She's a little bitter. I didn't mean to do that to the driveway. I'm still kind of green with auto trannies and I didn't know it would drain itself if you stand it on its tail with no t-case installed. It seems to be disappearing. Sorry Greenpeace...

Base housing was not happy about what I did to the driveway.
It drives me insane how the housing office will get all bent out of shape over a driveway that was poured by the lowest bidder with the lowest quality products. Then they expect it to last 50 years.
oh well, what ya gonna do.
My buddy has the best deal right now. He is living in a base house that is scheduled to be demolished as soon as he moves out. His neighbors are already gone and housing could care less what he does to the place because as soon as he moves they're gonna demolish the whole block and build new houses. He's pretty much the last one left. He uses his driveway for his wifes car, a neighbor's driveway for his truck, another neighbors driveway for his Ranger and when I come over I use a driveway across the street. The only thing better would be if they were garages instead of carports.

Cool.
It's still spring under in the front. 44 diff in front, amc 20 out back. Got about 6-7 inches lift over the stock saggy springs. I was running the 32's with stock springs and trimmed fenders for about 6 months. Plenty of offroading and no tire rubbing anywhere. If figure if 32's fit on waaaay sagged springs, 37's shouldn't be a problem with the 4" I have now! Low and flexy.:D I've got a Sterling 1 ton waiting to go in the back (I'll be shortening the axle tube's and getting custom axles to bring the track in a little, then do the same for whatever 1 ton front axle (probably ford) happens along.) The scary thing is the stock spring perches and shock mounts line right up on that sterling rear.

I think it's kinda funny that through the build, both the truck and I have gotten bigger. I was a 15 year old back when I got it. Nothing like breaking rusty bolts to work those muscles.

Not sure who you are but you have not been paying much attention to this rig. I have been on here for about 3 years and if you do a search you will find the whole build story. To save you the search time. It is a 75 NT chero frame with a 500 HP amc 401 with a 208 205 doubler behind an AMC 727. I am even in the 2006 calender. I had a problem with my computer and had to re register as the password I had saved on file was gone and I had changed IPs so I could not get an email back to me with the password. That said My old callsign was AMCcrazy and HARDCORE Pacer. If you are one of the moderators please PM me a way to get back on my old account.

Have you ever had any problems running all that power through the 208 xfer case. I ask because im eventually going to put a 440 in my chero when the 360 needs a rebuild and after i upgrade axles.
