My buddy wants to take the windshield out of his 65 j-2000 since it doesn't have the newer safety glass and put in the windshield from a newer one. The only visable difference is that the newer ones have chrome trim on them. can anyone walk me through this?

1 Get in vehicle.
2 Start engine.
3 Drive to nearest windshield shop.
4 Pay small amount for swap.
5 Stop by beer store on way home.
6 Park in driveway.
7 Get out of FSJ.
8 With ice cold beer in hand, admire a windshield that is not cracked and does not leak.......

Oh, if donor vehicle does not run, add tow donor to step #3.

timmirvin has the best idea, but if you want to do it your self the chrome trim comes off there a about 4 sheet metal screws that hold the chrome trim strips on.

IMHO, there are a few things that are better left to professionals.....because if you f*@k them up you have to live with your mistake for a long time or it costs you considerably more to get it re-done than if you would have let a pro do it right the first time.....like windshields.....or hanging sheetrock....

Now of course I am not talking from experience....a "friend" had this same problem once...yeh...a friend, that's it!!! ;)

step one- buy beer

step two- remove all trim and lay down a tarp inside an outside the truck

step three- get a big hammer and bust windshield

step four- clean all glass

step five-avoiding police drive to windsheil shop and have new one put in

NOTE: beer should be drank after comletion of each step

step 1 - drive truck to get beer
step 2 - go back home with beer
step 3 - call windshield place to come out and replace windshield (while drinking a beer)
step 4 - sit back and have a beer while watching the guy install the windshield

its that easy. :D

Ok if you have a winshield shop do it for you, do you need to get any new rubber or gaskets for them?I can't even find a windshield for sale around here..

yeah, you need to get a new windshield gasket. If you don't want a big glassy mess from taking the old one out, get a utility knife and cut the sheeit out of the old one from the outside, then you can pull it out. call the local salvage yards for a windshield, they run anywhere from $50 to $100.. some salvage yards can get you new ones for pretty cheap too... one for a chebby pickup, brand new here is about $120 here..

thanks, I'm off to find a gasket and a windshield then..What's the best way to transport a windshield back home..Like from another state..Stand them up on edge, like installed position? Or lay them flat? Or is this omething else that is better left to the installer?

standing up is best, just make sure that the parts that are on the floor are WELL padded against bumps... ya don't want to chip it right off the bat!

Wow, can't believe that it's been more than a year since I did mine, seems like a couple of months.
Drove about 10 miles with the windshield inside the cab of my GMC. About 1/2 way I started thinking about this move, made the rest of the trip kinda scary.
Anyway...

I concur with the professional installation. I helped the guy with mine, as it was too big for one person to do. But, I could have sat and watched. Cost was $259 with a new gasket, installed at my location. It was pretty easy for me, just the phone call and watching him and seeing I wouldn't have done it nearly as well or as fast as he could.

its that easy. :D Did that with my old Buick, was the best $128.50 I spent on that car.
1. $2.00 Gas to the store
2. $6.50 for the 6-pack of Bud light
3. $120.00 Windshield and gasket
4. Not having the windshield guy call me on a weekly basis (they did that for no reason whatsoever)...Priceless.

Breaking glass is cool, picking up the glass sucks and you never get all of the glass either you always find a glass shard somewhere smile.gif
