I have a '78 Cherokee Chief with a 360 that the PO changed out. The motor in it now has a block from a'74 and the intake from the '78 on it. But, when I put a new distributor cap on it i checked the wires to make sure they were right and they are totally backwards. The book shows #1 on the drivers side. On mine #1 is on the passenger side. I changed it the way it should be and it ran crudy. I'm fixing to put a new Mallory dist. in and am wondering if it will change anything. The valve covers are and everything else has ford blue paint on it and the jeep dealer said it was produced in Dec.73. Is this an AMC motor and whats up with the supposedly wrong firing order?

Number 1 is the first one on the DRIVERS side. To my knowledge the 360 never came with the number 1 cylinder on the passenger side. Hope this helps.

Did it run before? If so, then the wires were right. The position of the wires on specific terminals in the cap is really not that important; it's all relative to where the rotor is pointing when the #1 cylinder (front-most cylinder on the driver's-side) is at top-dead center. You place the wire to the #1 plug on a terminal in contact with the rotor in that position, and then work around the cap in the firing-order, following the rotation of the rotor (which is opposite from the direction a Chevy small-block rotates, which many people presume is the universal direction of rotation).

After hooking the plug wires to the distributor wrong once, that number will be forever tatooed in my brain.

Yes, I've even seen the cap & plug numbers scratched into the inside fender.
But....
Some of that has already been done for you. Usually someplace on the intake manifold the firing order has been cast in, sometimes also the cyl. numbers. If I am remembering right, I also saw an arrow indicating direction of distributor rotation on my Wag manifold when I was removing some of the grime...
revision..now I'm not sure about if that was on the Wag, since I just saw the samw on the Dodge van I was helping a buddy with today.
