I have a large amount of smoke coming out of my oil filler tube on the top of my intake manifold on my '78 Cherokee with a 401 motor. I notice that it gets worse the warmer the engine is and it doesn't have any particular smell to it. By large I mean enough to make it look like I am burning a serious amount of oil but nothing is coming out of the exhaust. Any body have any ideas what's going on? Motor has 147,000 original miles with good maintenance and no major overhaul. Thanks for the help.

Check your PCV system. Sounds like either the valve or passage is clogged up.

I would check the PCV valve and the vacumn line to it, make sure it is working properly. If that checks out I would do a compression test, as this could be blowby so a overhaul could be in the near future. At 147,00, I would not be overly surprised this is the case ;)

Mac, I have the same problem on my 88 wag with 110k miles. Only it was also spitting oil intothe air cleaner, not a lot, just enough to make a mess and evewntualy leak out the intake horn on an exhaust manifold. I'm still working on this problem but this is what I've done so far. Definately check your PCV. I did and it is working fine. I can only conclude that this is blow by from worn rings. I did a compression test, and got 125 on all cylinders, except 6 and 8 which I could not, no matter how hard I tried, get my comp gauge screwed in because of clearance issues. I unhooked my hose going to the air cleaner, and mounted a breather type filter on the oil fill tube. It still was spitting some oil out, being made worse by the fan blowing it around. I put in a can of "restore", an oil additive at most part stores for about 7 bucks, and the oil comeing out now is just a little spit. I am considereing running a tube from the fill tube to the side with some kind of catch can, so that if it is going to insist on spitting some oil, at least I can control it. My 360 seems to be in good shape, does not somoke or use oil, even the spitting out the fill tube only accounts for about 1/4 quart in about 500 miles (before the "restore"). If all you have is smoke coming out, and no oil, I think you would be okay to just keep it hooked up to the air cleaner, and just consider it blow by, but definately make sure your PCV is working right. Also, my smoking out the fill tube was really only noticeable under acceleration.

It's a good idea to unscrew the PCV fitting from the manifold to clear it of any burned on gunk. If it is blocked, the PCV system cannot perform as designed...
Hope it helps... smile.gif
