Ok i got a 84 J-10 with a 258/t178?/208. I want to put my 360 out of my 76 wagoneer with a 400. I just got the frame motor mounts and the cross member out of a 82/83 J-20..(also got the 44HD front and 60FF rear both 8 lug) Will the 208 bolt right to the 400 without an adaptor ? Will the drive shafts be the same ? And any other tricks you guys might have up your sleeve.

I'm not sure about the 208 going onto the 400, I would have to say NO without an adapter. Driveshafts will definitely be different lengths, and the steel motor mounts will move BACK from the L6 mounts. Also depending on the year of the J20 donor, don't forget about which side the pumpkin is on in the front, and as well the offset in the rear.

No NP208 will not work for you. As your axle drop is on the wrong side. Both the J truck axles you have are drivers drop, GM NP208 is pass drop. Drivshafts will have to be made. The TH400 from your 76 will only bolt up to a Q-Trac T-Case, unless you take it completely apart and swap out the Tailshaft to the one meant for your choice of T-Case. As I see it to swap to the 360 in your 84 and go with the auto, and stay somewhat bolt in. You will need a TF727 and NP208, or NP229/228, driveshafts, shifters, some wiring mods, drivers side exaughst manifold. I think I would swap in the J20 axles right away, get the driveshafts from that or another J20 with the same Trans/T-case combo you plan on using.

What about keeping the manual trans, what would work ? I know the bell housing and input shaft would be different.

The bellhousing is the same in my recollection for the T-176 both I6 and V8, but you already know the input shaft on the trans is different.

I don't know about you, but I'm not much of a fan of the T-176, so maybe now is the time to upgrade...

T176 behind a V8 would be bad news. Not worth the time to do it. You need to make the choice of Manual or Auto, and find the a suitable donor for the correct parts needed.

The 208 he has is out of a jeep so It is a drivers side drop, but it will not go on the th400. The manual tranny is what I would use anyway then it will be an easier upgrade to a t18 or np435. The drive shafts will have to be changed out for the ones out of the j-20.

I have 2 of them, and they're Ok (for now), but if you're going through all the trouble, go with a T-18 or a newer 5-speed like a NV 4500.

You will need a manual fly wheel from a V-8. I got mine brand new for $112 shipped.

Crisper,
Is your 258 bad or you just want more power?

Other issues:
Radiator, repositioned.
Get an underhood wiring harness from the 360 donor. You will need it to bypass the carb computer. You will need post 1980 driver side exhaust manifold, and possibly oil pan to clear the front diff.

You can use the 258 tranny, but it will move the gear shift forward 4" and you will need to fab a crossmember extension.

You will most likely need to fabricate most of the clutch linkage, or go to a hydralic set up.

New driveshafts, depending on what you decide to do with the tranny.

The bell housings are the same.
