OK OK! I know this may be a fair question to ask, but I still feel silly asking.
Here it goes.
How do you tell if your rig is a NT or a WT?
Secondly, can you 'easily' swap a NT for a WT? Or a WT for a NT? What kind of work will be done?

WT's, such as the Cherokee Chief and J Series trucks, had the large fender flares where as the NT's did not. I suppose you could put WT axles on a NT, but you'd have to think about fender rubbing. As for NT axles on a WT, no way.

actually you can tell by the driver... If the person behind the wheel of that FSJ is intelligent, good-looking and self-confident, well then you gotcherself a WT there.
any other type of 'lesser' driver and its prolly an NT. smile.gif

LMAO!!! Yip, Angus got that right on target!!!
But if the driver isn't there - look for the fender flares. The WT's have 3-4" fender flare extensions. The J-trucks have these - but they're even wider than the WT's

It functions well for all facets of my life. I have never regreted trading that raggedy K5 blazer for it. The simplicity of it's nature is what I love the most. Nothin Fancy, nothing jacked 3 feet in the air, w/ big tires and winch to boot. I loved the thread where all the WT owners posted their rides. They were all extrodinary rigs and I spent some time admiring the craftsmanship on display. But my old 76 NT is different, it is stock, and it hauls the groceries proudly. It isn't lifted so those groceries are really easy to load, so are engine blocks or whatever else life has me carrying. Not all of us need bigfoot, some us just need a ride to work. I will always love NT's. NT's came before WT"S, so with no NT"s there would be any WT's. Respect yo' elders!!! tongue.gif

I just like the style of my NT much better than the WT, although the WTs are much more capable and you can add bigger tires with less lift. But I have more retro than your WT, baby :D ;) Plus I have the 401 with the 4300 manifold, not that funky 4350 that you see on the '75 and ups (mostly WT) - So I could fit a Truck Avenger directly on with no problems! So there too, hah! ;) All in good fun smile.gif Look at my poll and you can see who favors what the most:

Yea your right about having to squeeze through narrow openings. It happened to me on a ride here in AZ. Had a tree t the left and a fence post on the right. I was the only one that could not fit through. So... I just ran over the fence post. NO Problem!!

I got the NT, cause it has 4 doors to load the kids in back. It would be quite a pain with only two doors.

The kids should be nimble enough. Heck, they could probably crawl in through the sliding side window easily enough. It'll be good exercise for them.

I love my NT cherokee. I have fit in some places I doont think my J10 would have fit without smashing the flares in (which i dont want to do because they are so perfect and rust free).
Now as for NT wags...oh they are trouble. No room for trimming or anything. Worthless pieces of junk off road I tell ya! They are the true grovery getters :D
Go Cherokees! :D

Yeah I suppose the wider axles existed under other vehicles, ie glad & trucks. I was speaking of the Cherokee lineage. Apologies across the board. "The Jeep Collector's Guide" does state that as far Cherokees go the WT was an off shoot of the allready popular NT.

Zac- check out the trimming on my WT, not much of a lift but flares were toast so out they went. it's a wonder but those flares really helped out on the stability of the front fenders, bend REAL easy now, stay away from boulders you can't see over the hood, trees laying down where you can't see them, etc. fenders crumple when the stock bumper hits it
