Hey gang,

I am a newbie to your forum. I have purchased my dad's 86 GW with 64M miles on the odo.

The truck has been fairly well cared for, IE: tune-ups, tires, brakes etc. But I will be driving it back from Kansas City to jacksonville, fl. Any helpfull points on what to llok for befrore I hit the road? And any "things" I can look forward to in the homecoming?

Thanks for your insightfull help and advise!

What  they made jeeps with only 64k? LOL. Dont worry im a noob 2 but my beast needs more tlc than yours, she has 234k on her and some rust. If your dad took care of her she'll get ya home no prob, only thing youll need is a gas card :D . Good luck......noobs rule ;)  :D

Welcome to the forum :D :D ..get a Haynes or Chilton Manual..a good set of tools to keep with you at all times. A laptop with wireless internet would be very helpful..You will find this site the most valuable tool you have!! Do the TFI Upgrade :D :D :D and carry a spare ignition module for starters..the rest will happen on it's own  . Have fun!!!

make sure you have fresh oil in the engine... on that all the other fluid level are up to their level.

Do not push that engine too strong in the beginning... you may have to break it in... no kidding... you know how your dad drive.... or ask him to take you for a ride... do not say anything..... at 68 Km, it has not been driving for too long at a time.....

enjoy

Ok, excuse the newbie stuff, but, what is a TFI upgrade?

TFI is an iginition upgrade that is probably one of the best "bangs for the buck". Parts can come from the local parts store or some from the junkyard, usually for $75, Basic concept is an increased voltage to the spark plug which makes more power, burns cleaner and improves gas mileage. The stock ignition coil, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor are replaced with higher energy parts. Check the tech library forum for an article on it. Some others may chime in with some links to other instructions. Making the change gave mine a good increase in take off from the traffic light and it runs stronger at all speeds.

For the newly purchased GW, check/change the fluids. If it was run regularly (as much as 64K in 17 years can be regular)just keep an eye/ear open for changes in sound and performance. If it sat for a long periods at a time(many months or years), you may find some leaking seals and driving it easy for a while would be good idea until everything gets re-broke in.

One thing to listen for is "pinging", sounds like steel marbles are jingling around when the motor is working hard such as going up a long hill. Premium gas will help the situation, but a new EGR or anti-knock kit may be needed if it doesn't. The tech library has a post on that also.

Good luck and welcome to your new obsession.

Tito

It must be Millions, Who ever heard of a Jeep with no miles on it.
