1977 Tailgate questions What fits?

I am looking to replace my rusted out tailgate in my 77 Wagoneer. I have found some newer tailgates 1982-1990 but don't know if they will fit a 1977. I called the dealer but everybody knows they don't know #$%@ unless it is on the computer. Found a couple places for a 1977 tailgate but they want $350. Only paid $400 for the truck, something is wrong here. Thanks for the help.

early 79 and down will fit, with out mods. Later 79 and up will fit but you will need to drill new hole for the latches that keep the gate closed. Your latches would be the round wheel type, the newer version looks like a horseshoe. If you find a tailgate with the wheel type latch, it will fit with no mods, no matter what its off of, Wag or Cherokee, all the same
