View Full Version : Performance muffler and converter??

I'm going to a 3" exhaust and want to know what is out there that offers the least amount of back flow resistance. I'm thinking about the Flowmaster Delta flow series 40 muffler and a high capacity catalytic converter from JC Whitney.
Any suggestions?

Hollywood Dave-
As for the muffler... it's a personal choice. The kind of sound while cruising/acceleration depends on your taste. As for hi-flo cats... there are a bunch of manufacturers to choose from(Summit & Jeg's offers free shipping).... both the muffler & cats are kinda hard to see "real" comparisons of performance.... I do like the Magnaflow mufflers :D

Dynomax mufflers is the only choice for me!!! They have a nice idle sound and when you step on the loud pedal you get a muscle car sound!! smile.gif Cats, I've have a couple on my camaro, I like Random Technology, they are alittle $$$$ but from flow charts I've seen they look the best. By the way, way are you doing a cat? Do you have emissions in San Antonio??

I agree with 1bad401. I have a 3in single exhaust and I run a Dynomax race muffler. You don't really know it is there until you hit the throttle. It is called the Round ulta flow race 3in muffler and runs about $60 from Summit. This is what it looks like.

I'm running a Dynomax super turbo(nice sound at idle and not obtrusive at hwy speeds),no cat for now thru 2.5".Really unless you have a whole lot of mods you don't need any larger than that, but then that's my .02

I have a random technologies cat, also. Seemed to be a high quality piece. I paired this with an Edelbrock RPM series muffler. Nice sound and all stainless. The muffler comes with a lifetime guarentee and is a nice small size. I have a 2.5" inlet/outlet muffler because that is what the cat is.

I like how my 3" Flowmaster 50 sounds. Much louder would be shaking the neighbors windows. :D

It looks like we are heading that way but it will be in the year 2007. And I figure after 170k it time...
Thanks

Have a shop make you a "off-road pipe"! It's just a pipe that replaces your cat, they can't put it on the FSJ but it's also simple as removing a couple of clamps. I tell them that I use the rig for racing or off-roading alot. It's alot cheaper than a high flow cat thats for sure!! smile.gif

I went with the Flowmaster 40 series and I really like it. It's got a nice mellow sound at idle and you can tell it's there when you hit the throttle.

When I "seviced" my cat I used an 18" piece of exhaust tubing which made the diffenece between the where the y pipe goes to 2.5" and into the muffler.I did this myself(buy a muffler cut off saw or use a sawzall)I've got stainless clamps with no leaks yet.
Muffler shops can't legally remove a cat from a vehicle without replacing it.They might weld up your system after you do the work yourself.
