View Full Version : need help putting new u-joints on front wheels
Have been experiencing a rhythmic vibration. After having all the u-joints checked it turned out to be the 2 u joints at each of the front wheels. Can some one walk me thru it or is this something better left to a mechanic? (which i am definetly not)

I've never done it myself, but if you need, I can photocopy you a few pages from my 1978 technical service manual.

Hey 2man, there are a couple really good articles in the Tech Library under the Axle section on this procedure. I followed them and managed to do both front axles in one afternoon. I cheated a little though and just took the axles to a machine shop to have the U-joint pressed out and replaced. It cost about $20 bucks, but I'm sure I saved myself at least that much in the frustration and busted knuckle factor. You will need a special socket to get the weird nut on the hub off. I got mine at a Schucks/Checker/Autozone type place for about $10. One other thing, since you're going to have the hub off, this is a real good time to inspect & repack/replace your wheel bearings. Have a look at your brakes too.
Good luck, if I can do it, you certainly can. smile.gif
