I'm just curious about the Powertrax locker. Has anyone tried it?

Ralph,
Here is a review I found on the Pwertrax diff.
http://www.drivetraindirect.com/powertrax_review.htm
I personally won't run this due to my tire being 38's (soon) and having to re-gear to 4.88's, I have to replace the carrier anyway. IMO... this would be great for those who want their stock gearing and 33's but bigger than than a 33 would probably prove to be damaging to the diff form the excessive torque of turning the biiger tires. My friend had a ez locker detonate with 33's and 4.11,s. Just my .02

if youre considering a "drop in"locker, the powertrax has a better warranty. neither it or the EZ locker will last more than a year in the rear of a full size, especially one with 32" or bigger tires. it may last longer in the front if you have locking hubs, depending on the frequency and severity of the useage.
on the other hand, one could view the lockright or ez locker as a "fuse" of sorts, that would break before axles,u joints, gears, etc. the problem with this is that you have down time to send the unit back, and it is possible for it to destroy the whole axle assembley when it goes.gears,bearings,etc. will not be covered in the warranty.
IMO its worth the extra $$$ for a detroit if you know that youre gonna stick with whatever axle youve got now. i definately wouldnt spend the $$$ on my amc 20(thats why i "fixed" it with the welder when it broke a few weeks ago! http://www.cs.colostate.edu/~zeimet/ubb/biggrin.gif ) because i push my rig hard, and as soon as it breaks again, its outta there. i dont want to commit myself to keepin an amc 20 because ive spent $500 on a detroit locker. i do know a couple of people whove been street driving the same detroit for 5+ years- in 4wds that are 'wheeled, and 10 second 1/4 mile street cars.
if you really care about the streetability factor, save another $400 or so for an ARB and its compressor. you can use the little compressor to pump up tires, and the ability to turn it on and off gives you the best of both worlds-an open diff for hard pavement, and 100%locked up when, and only when, you need it...

I read the article, River Beast, and it looks like this is a good solution for me. I don't have a lift or large tires and want to preserve the stock ride, but with better traction, especially in bad weather (where a big Jeep rules!)

Nice job. Not sure how I missed this one back in the day, but Backhoe had a Lock Right at this time. Which I transplanted into TC a couple years later... Congrats on 17k
