I've been told that the edelbrock 1406 is a good choice for the replacement for my old standard carb. Just recently though, I've heard that the 1406 is'nt street legal and wouldn't pass an emissions test. I e-mailed the guys at edelbrock, and was told that the 1400 was street legal but it's only for vehicles of 1980 and earlier.
I have a 1989 Grand wagoneer with a 360 v8. I am in serious need of a of a new carb but I want better than 10 miles to the gallon and to pass an emission exam. Can anyone help?

Yea, I can help. Check out www.customefis.com. (http://www.customefis.com.) I can get you better than 10 miles per gallon and can pass an emissions tailpipe test.

4v carbs are only street legal on trucks that came with them from the factory or as an option. The only part of the test where the 4v carb could come into play is in the visual inspection. If you keep your air system and your stock air cleaner, you shouldn't have much prob passing the vis test. The 1406 will prob give you better mpg and emissions smells, but it doesn't have an egr port, so that might cause you some probs, esp with the visual test, again.
I believe the 1405 or the 1400 come with an egr port, then you will also need a 4v intake to go with this 4v carb. If you do, make sure it has the egr on it as well.

The 1406 will be fine for you . Not sure were you are from but you should not have any problems passing inspeciton. I did it on mine and I do not have any problems at all. You do not need the 1400 carb because that is for gm's mainly. They have an egr port which is for gm. It hooks the egr up through it rather than cto vaccum. Your egr settup is through cto vaccum which is not a concern when running the 1406 carb. Mine passes with flying colors now. Although we do not have a visual inspecition our emission laws are very strict in Fort Worth.

By the way. I am getting about 10-12 city driving and 14-16 on the highway. I am running 31's. If I had stock tires I am sure I would get better mileage.
In states like Kalifornia, there are laws about keeping keeping things stock or using a part with an "EO" number (i.e. the manufacturer went through the red tape to show the replacement part didn't hurt emissions). If you don't have stock equipment or parts with EO numbers, you have to go through a big hassle to pass emmissions. In Kalifornia, you can have a smog referee pass your setup assuming you pass tailpipe emissions but it's a lot of hassle.
Here in Texas, they don't care how the fuel gets into your engine. They only care about what comes out. If you pass the tailpipe emissions, you're good. Some time this spring or summer, I'll be installing a Holley fuel injection system on my engine because I won't have any emissions hassle.
Check with your inspection people to see what's legal in your state. At the very least, get the EGR version of the 4bbl manifold and keep the EGR valve when you swap.

Hey Mike,
What adapter plate did you use for your edelbrock 1406 to your v8 360?

I just bolted my 1406 on today. I took the EGR port off my previous carb and everything worked fine. It runs clean. Out of the box there is a whole in the bottom that can either be filled with a plug or try what I did. Or you could just move to Tennessee, land of no emission tests!
