I dropped my tank today to get forward left rear spring bolt nut because that clip thingy broke of course. My frame looked nasty. I have heard it mentioned before but my jeep has been pretty rust free so I never gave it a second thought. I have some 3/16 channal I can use to reinforce the area. Do I just treat the rust and trim channel to fit and slap in? Is it bet to weld it or bolt it? thanks for any help.

If you can have if sand blasted first and then treated that would be best. You may want to give POR15 a try. I haven’t used it, but there are a lot of people in the restoration business that use it. It's always better to weld then to bolt on. Good luck

Look closely at your brake line that runs along the frame there. It will be the third steel line on the bottom. Check to see if any brake fluid is leaking out there. My frame is very rusty at the tank too and it might be the brake line has cracked. Check all 3 steel lines while your at it.
Check all the gas tank hoses too and replace 'em if they are worn out.
I removed the skid plate and painted it (NOTE: I have a Grand Waggy with a plastic tank). I also drilled a lot of 1/2 inch holes for better drainage.
Good luck!

last time, i used 2x2x1/8 angle bar. its the same thickness as the frame. i use 3/8 bolts to fit the angle and then i weld it. i would definitely replace the brake line whilst you have the tank down

Thanks for the advice I was planning on rerunning the line the po had ran a line along the out side of the frame to keep from dropping the tank. It isn't in the way but just never looked right.

I removed most of the rust today. The only place that is rusted all the way through is crossmember directly above the aft end of the tank. Should I be concered with this? I am still going to repair the frame should I weld some plate over the crossmember too?
