I found my exhaust leak...I took a pic. The bolt going into the drivers side manifold has a friggin hole in it???!! What gives? Is something supposed to be there? Do I just pull it out and replace it with another? Anyone know what size? http://www.angelfire.com/az3/cherokee/images/possiblebuy/manifoldhole.JPG

There's supposed to be an air injection manifold on both sides of the engine that goes there - an air pump is supposed to pump a small amount of air into the exhaust to make it run cleaner or something - totally useless, and if you are emissions exempt, just plug it up with grade 8 9/16 fine thread bolts, that's what I have done. Here's a pic of mine:

By the way, welcome to the board! You might want to put your name and Jeep specifications in your signature so we all can have an idea for future posts. Click on "My Profile" on the top and then "View/Update my profile" to do this.

An 1/4" pipe plug will work too. Easy - it won't go in very far, but it'll seal. Get a brass one at the parts store, or a black iron one at the plumbing supply.

okay...I have to take this thing through emissions so what do I need to fix it "right" according to emission standards? What parts do I need and could I get them from a checkers, autozone or equivelant store? Does anyone have any pics of what is "supposed" to be there?

The smog equipment you need varies from year to year. You'll need a stock carb with stock exhaust. The '79 factory service manual has a chart that tells you what stuff you need. It also varies depending on whether your car was delivered in CA or in the 49 states. You may have some slack if your state (AZ?) only does a tailpipe probe check, ie no visual inspection.

Either buy a '79 FSM or somebody on the board will chime in. For example, a '77 360 2V AT 49-states would require air injection (AI), EGR, PCV, vacuum controlled air cleaner, spark CTO and throttle modulator.

For the AI, you need a pump, brackets, hoses, diverter valve, and the tubing manifolds that screw into the exhaust manifolds.

My check list would be 1) get a FSM 2) check the laws in AZ - my '77 truck in MA has devolved to a safety-only inspection, yours might too 3) buy used parts from board members.

Rockcandy,
I have all this stuff available for you. Other than the air pump.

While your fixing that stuff you might want to tie the Power steering hoses and any wirring so that it isnt so close to the Exhaust manifold. Dont want the hoses melting and wiring shorting out.
Not tring to be rude just looks a little close in the pic.

J10/J20 Project, I might take you up on that but I should find out the exact laws here in Az. About how much would all that stuff cost me? Anyone know how much an air pump is, or does anyone have one of those?

Wagillac, I agree and I don't think you were being rude at all. I thought the wires and hoses were a little close too. I just got done replacing the power steering pump and both the return and pressure hoses. The hoses were pretty much fried from the manifold. I will be sure to tie the new ones out of the way!

The banjo-bolts may still be available from the dealer; they were a few years ago, for about $7/each. Be very careful about getting the old ones off, as they tend to begin twisting right where the feed-hole goes through the bolt, then snap off in that ugly spot. Use LOTS of PB-Blaster, and be gentle.

Everything else besides the molded hoses is available over the counter at most parts-stores, though the monkeys behind the counter will deny any such availability. Just slap them and demand to see the books. :D
