Well failing the second NOX sniffer test they told me that I need a new catalytic converter. My mechaninc called the parts store and they quoted him a price of $275 for a stock one. Am I crazy or is this really high? I'm looking for a good one, but not one that is going to break the bank. Has anyone bought one from online? Are you happy with it? Do the free flowing ones help on the gas milage?
I tried the search engine on this site and it came up empty. Please help....

Thanks guys..

Any good muffler shop will carry after market ones for way less than that. I think I got mine for the 85 Wag for $90 installed. Now we do not have smog checks here so I don't know if it would pass your state or not.

Well I just got off the phone with M*das and they quoted me $274 for the new cat. Is there an online store where I can get it for less? I really don't want to spend that much $$$ unless I'm going to get some major performance enhansments from it. What are my options...

Take a look at www.summitracing.com, (http://www.summitracing.com,) www.jegs.com, (http://www.jegs.com,) or www.jcwhitney.com. (http://www.jcwhitney.com.) They all have aftermarket cats for sale, for a lot less than $275

Hey Juice,

Did you notice Crazy_Jeepman has a couple used cat converters he is peddling in the "for sale" forum? Just a thought.

I am calling my exhaust man right now to see what one of his aftermarket universal cats go for...Well I talked to him and he said he would sell you a 2 1/2 inch for $90. 3 inch is $120. I am sure 2 1/4 would be the same as the 2 1/2. If you want to call him his name is Rick Guffey and his number is 918-756-7444. He said that you should be able to get one from Autozone but your state may not sell them. He is hard to reach sometimes and I had to page him but I don't think he would return a long distance phone call from his pager. I believe these are high flow converters but you would have to ask him about it. He is one of the best exhaust guys I have ever used and he will shoot you straight.

Just checked Summit and they have one for $52.00. It is a 2 1/2 universal 12 inch slip fit. Part number is CTO-6806. If you have 2 1/4 inch exhaust the part number is CTO-6805. I would go that route if I was you. They also make different lenghts as well.

Thanks guys!!!! I knew that $275 was way too much. For the $$ I'm going to save I could buy you all some adult beverages.

JeepFreak... I'm going to give your guy a call and ask him what I should do. Thanks a bunch.

seeing as how picky the smog nazis seem to be in your area, pay very close attention to the max engine size and max vehicle weight ratings for the cat you are considering. i have seen a lot of them rated for 5.2 liter and 5000 lbs.

NAPA also sells the hi-flows for about $90.
