I have a 76 Cherokee with a 360 brought over from a 78 Chief. I have it all put back together, vacuum lines connected properly, idle set, timed, etc, etc. It starts and idles great. I can rev the motor pretty high while in neutral. When I put it in gear and try and accelerate it bogs down and almost stalls until I let off the gas.
I have replaced all of my fuel lines and filter( I actually had to take the tank off and clean it out)and a new fuel pump. The only thing left is the carb. A friend suggested that the float in the carb might not be functioning correctly so the bowl isn't filling up quick enough? Any thoughts out there FSJ brethren??

sounds like the accelerator pump in the carb.

Now that you mention it I replaced the diaphram. Is it possible to put it or the spring back in incorrectly? Thanks!!!!!

Chris Forney:...
If you carburetor is a MC-2150... An elastomer valve goes in first with the point inward. Next the spring with large end inward. Then install the diaphragm so the pump-lever can engage the middle of the diaphragm. If you think the fuel bowl in the carburetor is empty or the accelerator pump is not working pull the coil wire and the air cleaner. Look down the Venturis (barrels) of the carburetor and open the throttle four times quickly to see if the accelerator pump is able to squirt and re-prime it’s self all four times.

if the engine is bogging down it might be getting too much gas. First i would look into the carb while engine running and rev the engine by hand and see if gas is being shot into the engine but not get too close as i have had a carb back fire on me while doing this.
Good luck

Well, I rebuilt the carb this weekend with the aid of the instructions provided. It was alot of fun!! It was pretty dirty in there, I was surprised. I managed to get everything cleaned and put back together and she fired right up! I thought I had it licked and then I went to step on the gas and it still bogged down! Arrrggg! I have literally replaced or cleaned everything from the gas tank to the carb! I double checked my timing. I am at a loss. I would sell the darn thing but I am in too much now and besides, she is a great old jeep. Any other suggestions out there?? Chris...

Now you have it rebuilt, double check those settings. Especially the Choke. a partually closed choke will do exactly what you describe. With it warmed up, look at the choke plate in the mouth of the carb. it should be fully open (strait up and down) if not, you are running too rich and will bog on acceleration.

Double check the accelerator pump. I have noticed on a couple 2150s including the one currently on my 87 that the linkage that moves the accelerator pump sometimes gets sticky. There is a spring on the drivers side throttle shaft that binds. Spray it with wd-40 and work it some, then check the pump action as Don has described above.

Just for some closure... I am an idiot. I was driving myself crazy trying to figure out this problem so I decided to replace my water pump gasket (it needed it) in the mean time. I took off the power steering pump to help me get at the WP and I noticed that my newly installed fuel pump had a hose not quite connected. When I put this back on apparently I didn't get the hose clamp up over the fitting. So when she was idling she was getting enough gas but when I stepped on it she sucked a little air. The good news is that I have completely rebuilt my fuel system. Thanks for all the help everyone!
