I know it has been said before but I had to add my $.02. I finished putting in my TFI upgrade tonight. It took me about two hours because I had to fab a coil mount (still not the best). Once I was done I turned the key and The Red Rhino came to life! It sounded better right off the bat. I took it to the store to get what else, gas :D and it sounded better than it ever has. There was no idle or low RPM stumble like before. I am happy I finally did it. My wife even said it sounded better so you know it has to be true ;).

Thanks irbob for the parts list off your site, and thanks GM Killer for motivating me to do it.

Porkchop I agree, starts are quicker and definitely an improvement in the acceleration department. I did one thing different, I used a MSD Blaster 2 coil instead of the the TFI coil. Didn't have to make a coil mount and I called MSD and the specs on the coils are almost identical.
Is an easy upgrade that is definitely worth the bucks!!

Could sombody post the parts, prices, and labor involved in such a upgrade?

I have not done one before. But am interested. I have a miss that I cant track down. This may be a good fix.

Yeah, Ditto what Stuka said. I thyink this could be a good thing, and I know the info is all along in here somewhere, but this would be a good place to post inventory and what it takes to do it. Thanks.

Just check out IRBOB's web site. He has a good step by step description. If you don't have to buy every thing new, like coil and cap adapter, then it can be done for around $50 including plugs and wires. It will make a big difference,

Yes check out Irobs site. He has the best list for the upgrade.
All the parts are listed there including the prices. When I did it last year I was on my own dealing with bonehead parts counter guys. Luckily Monstermash kept the empty boxes fromm his upgrade and he gave me the right part numbers.

Porkchop, how do you get to Irbob"s site. Like to make the same switch.

It's fsjeep.homestead.com, or go to gen discussion the "What does your wife/girlfriend drive?" thread for one of his posts.

Boy I've been out of the loop for a coupla day's and look what happends. Thanks for the comments guys. I enjoyed building that TFI page and did it for all of you. I had the same prob with finding the parts so though it a good thing to put together. You see a handfull of tech articles but none with pix except for mine :D . I didn't know what a TFI coil of a dist adapter looked like. Enjoy my site listed in my sig. Sorry I wasn't here earlyer to answer your questions.

porkchop...sounds like the TFI did the same for your rig as it did mine. I'm still going to play around with those springs some day to see what that does.

Glad I found this site. It looks like you guys/gals might be able to answer some of my questions about my new (1987) Grand Wagoneer.

I have owned this truck for less than a week. It has 99K miles on it, body is fine, mixture is a bit rich, and sounds like the timing is off (it's my first jeep, not sure how it usually sounds).

Today the truck back-fired and died, and has not restarted yet (three hours have passed so far). The tank has fuel, and the old boy sounds as if he would love to start, but just can't.

The previous owner was a GW collector/rebuilder, and a friend. He also has been transferred to a new duty station (we are in the army), so I can't go to him for help.

Any ideas?

Ok, problem irbob.

You made your site with DHTML didnt you...

That ONLY works with windows. It wont work on any other operating system. So people who dont run winblowz cant access any of the links on your site. The main ifsj page is the same way. No clue why. There are alot better ways to make the page. But ohwell :/

Welcome! Without more info to go on its only a guess but IF it ran good before and IF you have spark and IF you have a 360 with the Motocraft 2150 carb and IF you smell gas after cranking it then MAYBE you have a blown power valve in the carb causing it to flood. Give us more info - these are good people here :D
BTW you should open a NEW TOPIC to start a new thread instead of POST REPLY. you'll likely get more responses.

I was able to access irbob's website with a Mac and my OmniWeb browser.

Couldn't access the page with IE 5.1 for the mac.

PS. I'm running a PB G4/400, 384 RAM, DSL.

Does everything in the TFI upgrade apply to a 401?

Yes - you do have the Motocraft distributor/ignition correct??

Can you tell me the part number and the price for the MSD coil? Did you buy the bracket?

Would this upgrade help even though I have MSD ignition?

Stauter

MSD # 8202.
I paid $29 at a local speed shop and no I didn't buy the bracket because the blaster 2 coil fits in your stock bracket.
Good Luck

Scott...Yes it would. We installed a MSD system on my sons scout. After upgrading the cap rotor and wires on my GW I decided to do it to his and it definitely made an improvement over just the MSD. I think now we are getting the full benefit of the MSD system
Good Luck

Stauter-

Are you running the MSD ignition box? The guy at Kragen didn't have a clue which coil I should buy. It seems that one coil goes with the MSD ingition and 1 doesn't.

From what I could figure out, I needed the 8203 coil since I don't have the MSD ignition box.

Guess I should call MSD directly.

If I buy the MSD coil do I still need to buy the coil plug that irbob got from Pep Boys?

Messing with the electrical system makes me nervous, done wrong and I know I could fry the system.

Solcal:
The MSD Blaster coil is s direct replacement for the stock Jeep unit. The connector that's in the Jeep will fit the Blaster with no cutting, refitting, etc. Remove the old coil drop in the new and plug it, done.

Hi,

My unit is an 84 GW 360, stock, runs well. IF I do this upgrade, can I just:

Install the MSD coil listed here
Install the wires and modifications to the cap / rotor
Install new plugs gapped to 45

I believe that is it? I just installed a rebuilt dist.

Lastly, I live in Colorado, get about 12 mpg average. Highway, at 70 no AC I can squeeze mid 13s. HAs anyone realized a significant increase in fuel economy?

Thanks
E

Welcome! Yes I have noticed an increase in mpg. I use to fill up my tank on Sun. Drive it to work everyday 18 miles round trip. I would not drive all weekend and then have to fill up agian on sunday to drive to work. Last week was my first week with the upgrade and I managed to drive it to work all week, drove around town on Sat. and Sun. about 15 miles total and I then drove to work Mon. and Tues. and had to fill up on the way home. I know that doesn't sound like much but it is to me.

hey PC, that means you where getting like 4.2mpg. if you where down close to empty when filling up before the uprade. thats REALLY mad man.

Now you get 6mpg if you where on empty when ya filled up.
