I'm going to be dropping my 360 block off here soon to get milled and to have the crank turned down. Is there any reason that I need to get the heads shaved. I have read here that several people have done this.. Now is the to correct the surface being warped or some other reason.. Thanks Pete

Two reasons to machine the heads: To clean up an out-of-flat condition, and to increase your compression ratio.

A decent machine shop will let you know if you need the first, unless you just told them to fix whatever needs it.

You would have to decide to ask for a compression ratio increase, and discuss the problems that can arise from it, such as intake manifold fit, valve clearance, and pushrod length.

Hope this clarifies.

Ditto what Al said. If this is the engines first rebuild, or if it hasn't been milled before, its always good to do a "cleanup" pass.

DDGETHS, just noticed your from Bremerton! I lived there for a few years in the early '90's. Squidville and Bremalows!!LOL

oh that's to funny man.. Bremalows... LOL.. Now al mentioned that I might have some problem mounting the intake manifold. What so I do to fix that? Get it shaved? This is my first engine rebuild so I have no clue.. Pete

If you have the heads shortened, this will affect the fit of the intake manifold to the heads. So the intake manifold has to be machined accordingly. And because you will affect the valvetrain geometry, you will need to have shorter pushrods, and you will need to ensure that the valves do not hit the tops of the pistons.
