How much lift will i need on a J-300 to fit 40" tires without trimming?

around 12 inches, maybe a bit more. You will also need way bigger axles. D60 front and a 14 bolt rear.
But unless your building a mud runner...my personal opinion is that you should go with 36's or so with bit less lift so you dont fall over so easy.

My plan is to have this built completely. Cad 500 in front of an SM465 & NP205, 14bolt rear, d60 RC front. Airbag suspension all around. Basically my J-300 is a frame and cab right now, it was/is a flatbed and I am looking for a box. I am in MI so its pretty much mud, but i love rock crawling too.

Oh yeah, and the reason i idont want to trim is i still want it to look like its show-truck quality. I want people to think that it hasnt touched dirt and then blow their @$$es out of the water.

air bags arent rock crawling friendly. Fine for mudding..but i you do crawl around...leafs or coils are much better for this.
But 40's would go through mud nicely smile.gif And being the J-truck's are already wide tracks they have larger fender openings then NT's. Todd had 39.5's on river beats with 14" of lift, so I figure 12" on a WT should fit 40's.

Why do you say they arent rock crawling friendly? The lack of droop? If I was doing a 4 link i might as well go with coils now that i think about it.

Air bags dont flex like coils or leafs, and yes they dont droop, and compressing them to far can cause themm to rupture.
A correctly setup 4 link with coils would be better then air bags IMHO. Leafs are better if you gona be mud dragging in my opinion tho.

Stuka nailed it air bags are not a good idea for rock crawling

I was thinking it would be cool because it was different.... screw different. I would like to keep the lift in the suspension instead of body so leafs at that height would have quite an arch and wouldn't flex all that well then, so it seems then like coils are the way to go.

dirt: simply doing a spring over will give a extra 6-7 inches of lift, with stock springs. Then get a sett of 4" springs and then you have 10-11 inches. But coils have that cool factor smile.gif

just my 2 cents, spring over axle for 6-7"s,then 4" springs, and 3"body lift and you should clear 4d's :)

But there is one problem, it is a stock soa setup. I thought, oh yeah i can just do an soa and have cheep lift, then i looked at it.

oh ya...you already sit higher then a regular FSJ. In which case you dont need as much lift...if you already sit up higher. 4" springs and a 3" body should do ya...except nobody makes springs for you rig...would have to be custom.
So ya...might as well just go coils...

Exactly the thought proccess i went through before, but came up with airbags. Now where to get coils???

You can get coils from just about any full size Ford with I-Beam front suspension. Those would be the best in my opinion.

You can fit fodees but how much flex will you have??? My 36's almost hit my rock rails and i need to go foward on the front axle to fit fodee two's.
