My 360 overheated and 100 miles later it still had oil press (50-70psi) but it ran and sound like it was going to blow at idle. Going down the road it was OK but the trust in the engine just wasn't there anymore.

I have a Brand new 81' crate 318 engine that I would love to see in my jeep. I need help finding some way to make it happen.
Does sombody know of an adapter plate that would work?
Maybe a tranny swap?
The jeep is a 88 Grand Wagoneer with Select trac
4 wheel drive.
It had a 360 but for all purposes it burnt up....
it has a 727 trans, I don't have the tranfercase specs right here,
I'ed love to swap the 318 for a 304,360, or another 401 but "finances" are preventing it right now.
Got any Ideas????

talk to advanced adapters, if anybody has an adapter ring its them. But it wont be cheap at all.

To swap that 318 in the easiest would be to find a Dodge tranny and transfer case and mount those in there. You'll have to fabricate new brackets, drivelines and maybe radiator mounts, exhaust, wiring is gonna have to be changed a bit. After you do this stay with Dodge engines, if you want a 401 you'll have to pull all that you changed and go back to stock setup.

Sell the 318 for cash and find a running replacement for your motor. Otherwise you will end up spending more money on custom adapters and a butload of time swapping. Personaly I would use the extra time and get a temp job to save money instead of a motor change that gains nothing. A 318 is hardly worth the time for a swap. Now lets not start a big fight, I have nothing against the 318, but it doesnt make any more power than a 360 and the time and money to swap it in would be counterproductive in my opinion. Just my 2 pennies.

find 727 for 318 have tail shaft swapped out of yours into one for 318 transfer case should then bolt in motor mounts and such you will have to build your self. better swap in my mind would be to go to 440. As Bobbo pointed out just because you have motor it does not mean that swap is good idea keep us informed of your progress and take lots of pics. They arn't making 360 any more and so it is time to start looking for swap material.

If you're not willing to go through the hassles of the swap, I have a complete bolt-in 360, ready to go, that I'll sell to you for $400. I'm in west/central CT.

I would think in reality it would probably cost you twice that much to swap in the 318, by the time you get the tranny and all the misc. parts.

Lets see....radiator hoses, throttle connection, engine wiring hookup, custom exhaust pipe, iair pump mounting, power steering pump mounting, alternator mounting, A/C compressor mounting, tranny adapter or tranny disassenbly and tailshaft replacement, engine-tranny-tcase replacement means: driveshaft lengths?-tcase shifting hookup? Tcase crossmember fitting?

There's a lot to this. Nothing that can't be handled with enough time, fabrication skill, tools and money.

Now if only you had a Chryco 360 or a Ford 360, they would be bolt-ins!

If it was say an injected 90's engine, that's a different story, but that's not what we're talking about.

Sell the 318 and get another AMC motor, if you want to spend the least. smile.gif
