why would you need one shortened?

for an AMC engine your need a different gear....but for the buicks you should be able to just steal one from a junk yard and drop her in.

Yep, mid 70's Buick 350's came stock with HEI. remove the ballast resistor on the fire wall, wire it up and your set to go. Commom scrap items or just order it up new for say a 1974-5 Skylark or something with a 350.
Your topic title mentions "tfi". Not sure what you're thinking there.

There's a guy who works the buick car crowd that takes the standard narrow body stock dist and modifies it to an hei keeping the narrow body. Do a search on v8buick.com under small block.

I looked at some hei's at the junk yard one day and got confused. All of the 70's buicks I found had the dist in the rear of the engine like a chevy, and the dist looked very different in the shaft area. Where the buick 350's all the same with the dist in front? I know buick went with a sbc motor at some point. Could just be I had bad example to look at?

They did start using the SBC motor at some point but I thought that was in the 80's, not sure?

Dave brings up a good point on the stock HEI swap, it is big and will hit the FSJ AC compressor setup if not relocated. I avoided all that by using the GM AC bracketry that moves it off to the passenger side of the engine.

When I get this in and setup I hope to modify the stock AC bracketry for OBA, lots of room on that side, it just was not allocated wisely.
