I use retreads on my daily driver XJ. Have had them on for over a year with no problems, 20k miles and they have at least 10k left. Not bad for $205 delivered for 4 235 MT's :D

All of the Semis use them around here, I can tell becuase I-95 is covered with them after they blow out. On the up side I constantly get to hone up on my motorcycle manovering skills.

My dad used them at one time on his semi. But not anymore. I wouldn't run them on my jeep, but that is just me.

Didn't see where you live BUT, some of today's retreads are not too bad. IF you live in a cooler area (AZ is a no no0; IF you do 80/90 percent off road/20/10 on road; IF you only drive moderately on pavement; IF you always keep your tires nearly full of air, IF you're concientious about examining your sidewalls EVERYTIME you get in the truck; THEN you might like them over time.
IF NOT, then yeah, they might run for you for a good while, but you'll be sweatin just waiting for one to let go at the worst possible time.
Keep a NON retread spare and check out the rep of the shop that does the tires you're thinking of getting. Get a good warranty etc. and go for it if you want smile.gif I've seen some that were great deals, I've seen others that were a disaster in the summer in MOAB..

Here is where I purchaced my retreads: http://www.hi-tec-retreading.com
They come with a 2 year warranty and everyone I've found that has purchaced these tires have had zero problems.

Not to be a naysayer but I just got done with a set of HI Tecs, 235-16's. Overall I was happy but at the end of the 2yrs the tread was about gone and one of them did seperate. 2yrs for $250 didn't seem like a bad trade tho.

kyj10,
personally, i wouldn't shoe with recaps. like tadsal mentioned, i haven't recapped since the early 70's. i'm sure the technology has improved since then, but if you're hauling family, get the real thing.
as a fellow ky jeep-mon, i travel i-75 daily. i put 120 miles on whatever i happen to drive that day. my biggest fear is either a dummy switching lanes without looking or a recap carcass from a big rig crapping all over my windshield. spooky, either way!
if you wanna save a buck and have some good tread, check out Cooper Tires (http://www.coopertires.com) . i just put a set of Cooper Brand Falls Roadmasters (235-75R-15's) on my 79 Cherokee for 250 bucks. These are hi-way tires (all season), have a nice tread pattern and won't break the pocket book. I'vr got a set of Cooper Mastercraft (235-75R-15's) on my 86 FS-Bronco. i think i gave about 300 for those. They have a 40k mileage tag and i've put 50k with at least another 15-20k on them. Of course, that's all hi-way driving. Your mileage may differ.
But, if'n yer dead set on encapsulated rubber, then read on @ http://www.retread.org/ ... see what they're sayin....
see ya on the roads of the bluegrass ....
