I have to do a chain swap in my QuadraTrac and I have a new chain and I also have a spare Transfer case sitting under the bench. Both t-cases need a chain cause they are both stretched really bad and skip under a load. Should I do the one in the truck and just pull the rear d-shaft and rear half of the case, or the one that is under the bench and then do a t-case swap? I think it would be much quicker just doing the one in the truck, I have air tools and I also have a body lift so getting at all the bolts in the truck are probably not an issue....what do you think? Anything I should watch out for??? I have heard something about a spring and ball for the vacuum diaphram switch....any input is encouraged, do I need to remove the low range unit to separate the case?
cheers

It's much, much, MUCH easier to just take off the back half of the 'case that's already on the truck. That way you don't damage the seals between the 'case and the tranmission, plus it's ligher and less work.
You DO need to remove the reduction unit first - it's pretty straightforward, although wrestling it around the front of the gas tank can be interesting.
Don't worry about taking the vacuum diaphram switch apart unless it's broken and you're trying to fix it. It can just stay together, no spring or ball to worry about.
If for some reason, you decide to remove the whole 'case, replace the 2 ring seals where the output shaft of the trans goes into the transfer case. If you don't, it's an almost gauranteed ATF leak, and a big one at that.
Good luck!

thats what i thought, thanks for the reply, I was just curious because I havent actually been inside one of these cases before but it sounds pretty straight forward though, I was pretty much set with the idea of just having to remove the rear d-shaft, pretty easy that way, the front is a pita without removing the crossmember.....thanks again....cheers ;)

When you get the back of the case off, just grab the left drive sprocket with the left hand, the right drive sprocket in the right hand and start pulling out towards you. Leave the chain on. Going back together, put the new chain over the sprockets, then shove the sprockets into place.
Have Fun!

I did my chain today, went fairly smooth, hardest part I think was separating the case, checked the chain slack....it had an inch and 5/8's of deflection....sloppy, the new chain has less than 1/4"....drives much nicer now. Thanks again illegalFSJ for the quick reply's
