Hey guys/gals, hope to get some advice.

Mistress has always been easy to start, but over the last two months she's picked up a new habit that is getting to be almost daily.

Used to be:
- Pump the gas pedal 3 times
- She could hardly wait for me to turn the key.
- Hit the pedal once and the idle drops
- Drive off.

Now what happens:
- Pump the pedal 3 times
- Just as eager to start
- runs 2-3 seconds, then dies.
- Starts right back up at the fast idle (Choke still set)
- Hit the pedal and the idle drops
- Put her in gear and she dies
- Start again and she's fine to drive off

One other point, I used to squeak out almost 16.5 mpg on the highway (thanks to Jeep's 2.72 rear diff decision). But now I'm only getting 12 mpg. I know, I shouldn't complain.

The new habit only happens when started the first time for the day. Sits at work all day with no problem when I leave. I put a new fuel pump in about 1 1/2 years ago, so I'm not sure about it. I've traced the vac hoses and haven't found any leaks.

Anybody have any ideas? Is it time for a carb rebuild?

Thanks for any info.

Sounds like time for a tune up. Check the plugs and make sure they are gapped correctly...wear on the electrodes ect...look at the wires, the distributer cap and rotor for wear or just replace. I doubt its the fuel pump as you are getting gas to the carb. Oh, check the air filter too, if it gets too clogged the engine cant suck enough air and performance will drop. Do you notice any power drop when driving?

I just fixed that prob I was having by just changing my fuel filter. Take it off, drain the fuel out of it, and if it still weighs a ton then it's prob full of crap. Cheap fix and rack it up to "preventive maitnence" if it does not work.
Take Care,
J

I should of added, I also tightned my carb mounts. That made a HUGE diff untill I over tightned and snapped my mounts in two places...oops ;)
