OK, as everyone probably knows by now, my tranny (727) is ****ed. So, I had a brainstorm as of late, since I can prolly get my hands on some Dodge or Chevy 3/4 or 1-ton axles ( opposite sides for the front diff ), so my question is:

What will I need to convert my 727 to a TH400/whatever pass. front output/centered rear T-case I can get?

Well, the TH400 will bolt to your 360 just fine. You can put in a D20 tcase, but you need an adapter to mate the D20 to the TH400. AA sells them for about $400 with the shorter output shaft for the TH400...unless you can find a used one.

A bonus would be to get a scout D20 tcase, and twin stick the tcase...cool mod. Supposedly, you can do this to a Jeep D20 as well, but is easier with the Scout D20.

I'm basically doing the same thing. I am pulling my QT and rear offset D44 for a D20/D60 or 14bolt setup. Found a TH400 mated to a D20 already with the adapter and output shaft. Best part about it...it was sold to me CHEAP!!!!!!!!

Above as stated plus flexplate for the said tranny. Also depending on your exhaust, possibly a new Y pipe. Then linkages ect. I'm sure there are a slough of other possibilities, but it seems you aren't looking to drop a ton of cash.

Also, as I recall you're on your 88th tranny or something. What's going on? Who's rebuilding them? Tranny cooler? Plugged lines? Bad gearing? How about another rebuild.

Depending on what you can get the parts for it would probably be your cheapest option. Or are you looking to beef up at the same time?

Wow thats alot of typing for me, I appoligize.

You already have the T-Case that will work behind a TH400, the Jeep NP208 you are trying to sell ;) . You need the GM 208 to TH400 adaptor and the output shaft for the trans and the input for the T-Case. Forget about the D20 and expensive adaptors. Just shop around, all these parts are stock and can be found CHEAP. Oh and to get the driveshaft over to the Pass Side, use a 208 from a Dodge and swap in the Chevy input. Unless you do not mind a slip yolk rear output then you can just use a GM NP208 as it is. To use a TH400 with a 208 for a drivers drop: use the Jeep NP208 and swap in the input shaft and output on the TH400 along with the GM TH400 to NP208 adaptor, to use a 208 with a Pass drop, use a Dodge NP208 and swap in the input shaft and output on the TH400 along with the GM TH400 to NP208 adaptor.

Look for IH ScoutII Dana20. It was installed on a Chryco727 tranny. I would guess you need the output shaft, adapter and Tcase. This gives you passenger side drop without a lot of other part swapping. Since the tranny needs to be rebuilt anyway, having the output shafts swapped is no biggie.

IH used the 727/dana20 combo from 1972 to 1979. Lots of them out there. In 1980, they used the Dana300 with the same adapter as the ealier D20 case. In ScoutIIs, Dana20s and Dana300 interchange. Not so with Jeeps. A Jeep Dana300 won't fit on a Dana20 adapter.

Now this brings me to a question of my own. Wouldn't a CJ have a 727/D300 combo? Or, did they use a smaller tranny? 904? 999?

Yeah Rande, the CJ's used 999's with the D300.
