I am on my third Grand Wagoneer, this one being a 1988 with only 65,000 miles. The prior ones were a 1986 with 156,000 miles, and a 1972 with who knows how many. Anyway, I had two flex tracks replaced on the 86. I had a local mechanic fix those. When those broke the window was real loose and essentialy fell all the way down into the door. On my new jeep the window went about halfway down and stayed there. The motor still turns but it doesn't move the window. I decided I wanted to try to fix this myself, so I pulled off the door panel and looked inside. I can see the track and it does not look like it broke, also I was able to push the window back up and it stays there, unlike my old jeep where it would slide back down. My question is, how can I take a closer look in there to track down the problem, the access holes in the door are not very big and don't offer a lot of access? Could it be that the motor is just not driving the flex track?

PS: This is my first post, I just found the website and absolutely love it. Are they any other FSJ owners near Sheppard AFB?

Try running the window with the door panel off. this will tell you if the flex track it moving like it should. they really are pretty easy to fix. I've done it a couple of times. if it is just the flex, then you have a grand total of about $14-$15 in the track.

have the teeth wore off the track? and or the gear on the motor? I don't know if the gear is metal or plastic(nylon). I'm also not sure what holds the gear on the motor if it is a roll pin, that could be broke. I would be the teeth on the track are bad, and only half way up. that is why the window stopped half way down.

Your flex trac has probably stuck to the metal trac.My passenger window did this.Window stayed up till I went to lower it and it drop about half-way.Also tracs sometimes break and jam the motor.Dealer availible trac is ready to install, the flex trac you can get at the parts stores are cut to fit.On the '88 you take the torx head screw loose to work your metal trac/motor assy around to remove the old/install the new. There's are hole mid way up the door for installing the screw into the window itself.
