got off of work midnight, go start the "bomb". Pump gas once, turn key, and starter kicks in......motor catches like clockwork......but the @#$%@ starter keeps whirrrrrring......and grinding and nasty other stuff.....got out, tapped the starter a few times, (had to jump out and snatch a cable from the battery to keep the starter from grinding away in to useless dust..... ......anyway, i get up......hook the cable........motor turns. Key is in off and locked.....tap the starter few more times. nope. three starts an a backfire later still no good. truck getting towed home today. could a short between ignition mod and switch (key) cause the starter to stick? (just bought a new ig. module). noticed some suspicious looking wires underneath some more suspisious wires.....i figure i need to start looking somewhere. any good schematics floating around out there?
<sigh>.....time to make offerings to the Jeepgods in the form of green and red stuff.....

My first guess would be that funky little starter solenoid on the fenderwell is going south.

The relay is the usual suspect. It'll cause the engine not to shut off, as well, that's even more fun, when that happens. The only way to shut it off, is to pull the wires off of the coil, which can be an adventure in itself, especially when it's wet outside!!

sounds like the solenoid is stuck closed thats the thing on the fender where the positive cable and the starter cable meet. short money
