View Full Version : what is that 'CLUNK!!!'?
I've got a '79 J-20 that has a noise ('clunk') somewhere in the drivetrain. This occurs on acceleration after coasting.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I have a 79 J-10 and I know what you are talking about. I think I need new universal joints. I have 159,000 but I have driven it less than a year. I also get clinks when I put it in reverse. Do you get vibration from the drive train as well? Mine does at about 60 mph. I usually drive about 50.

You might want to check the transmission mount and crossmember bolts. Mine had a clunk when I put it in gear and when accelerated. There are 8-10 bolts and all mine were loose.

Yeah, a u-joint would do it, so would play in the ring & pinon gears .

If the U-joints are ok I would check the trany mount like David said. Mine was toast and would clunk after coasting. Did it real bad if you coasted then stabbed the gas hard.
The bolts were loose too.
Try pushing up on your transfer case. If you can push it up 1/4 inch by hand its bad. You gota push pretty hard. Thats the way mine was.
Also when I changed mine I had to loosen every thing up to get the bolts to start in the new one. Also I used a botel jack to raise things up for the swap. I never took the cross member all the way off. But a GW might not be the same.

Definitely check the U Joints. Also check the CV or double cardan joint. this is the funny looking double U-joint right next to the Xcase.

Thanks for the replies.

Guy, all the above posts a good advice but be sure to take a "real good" look at the CV joint on the front drive shaft. They are notoriously neglected items when it comes to being greased and if it lets go at hwy speed it WILL remove major chunks of aluminum from the front of the transmission case http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/frown.gif
