Ok, I finally picked-up the ’87 GW. The ’88 had a bad water pump and the started motor is bad so it was not good for the drive home. I had to replace the fuel filter on it cause the old one was leaking gas on the engine from the body of the filter. As I got it home, I GOT ALL BUT THE DRIVERS REAR WINDOW WORKING! The power mirrors work. But I did notice while the rear window does work from the key out side there is no liftgate cover. It says in the glove compartment that the truck is equipped with a rear TRAC-LOCK diff. Now is this a locker or like a limited slip? Here is the list of problems with it I can see so far.
1. Power steering leaking from pump fluid leaks down to rest of steering system.
2. Sway bar bushings are shot
3. Oil pan has major rust on driver’s side, and looks like the front seal is leaking a little drain plug also leaking.
4. Trany is holding onto gears, when you come to a complete stop it strains of a sec then bumps and releases? The fluid level is good I toped it off with two qts. of fresh Dextron III. The AT pan is wet but the COOLER LINES AND THE BODY OF THE TRANY IS CLEAN?
5. Left rear sags, that is the side with three feet of frame rot on it
6. There is No spare worth the truck, the bar style under body holder is there and the locking screw is sheared off.
7. Last two feet of tail pipe is rusted off
8.Tthe PO cut the return to tank hose coming off the fuel filter and plugged the end with a screw?? Why do you think he did this?
9. There is some heater size hose on the drivers side front of the engine with a vacume actuated valve on it that is also blocked off with a large bolt??

Trac-loc is a limited slip (stock).
1.Check your hoses.
2.Easy
3.Sound like a new pan if it is badly rusted.
4.You don't say how many miles are on it so, I would start with checking the adjustment on the modulator linkage (on the drivers side of the carb) and make sure it has a "return" spring that holds it tight. Change the filter and fluid. See what that does.
5.Fix the frame and install a LIFT KIT :D .
6. Vise grips??
7. Time for an exhaust upgrade!
8. Maybe the line rusted out. Who knows, he was the DSPO after all...
9. Sure it is not part of the air injection system? How are your brakes? It's not the vacuum for the brake booster is it??? :D
Looks like you have a pretty good list to start with. No doubt you'll find more to add to it as you start the process. Good luck!! Keep the questions coming.

Thanks Kerry,
OK ALL GW's have a limited rear, I guess I need gear lube for the rear that has limited slip additive. The truck has 140,000 miles on it, I will check that modulator linkage spring. The exhaust is in good shape othere than tail pipe so I am just replacing it. How would I know if the return line is rusted out?? Ya, I think he took the air pump out, any problem if I don't have emissions tests?

The lube is standard and the limited slip additive comes seperatly. If the modulator spring is intact check the adjustment. I was thinking that the return line may be rusted because of the frame rail damage. Other than looking over the line which you will have a chance to do when you drop the tank to fix the frame I don't know of a way to really test it. As far as the air pump goes if the rest of the system is intact then I would replace it. They are no too much $$ - I would get one with a lifetime warranty - you will need it someday.

Hey Shortlid, That 140,000 mile trac-loc probably does not need limited slip lube. That additive actually is intended to keep the clutches from chattering and it will make limited slip clutches slip more. I have discovered this with powr-locs and trac-locs alike. Change your oil and drive it. If it chatters at all in corners try adding a little additive at a time till it stops. That way you retain some of the limited slip qualities. Trac-locs are non adjustable and not really known for being that tight even when new. I would give it a shot without the additive first...Kaiserjeeps...(Al)..

OK, thanks guys! I just got the trany tune-up kit with the Jeep for $8.00 droped the pan removed the filter and found a LOOSE O-RING IN THE PAN!! Then I greased the modulator linkage and checked the spring. That is as far as I got tonight. I will put the new filter in and the new gasket and clean pan. Then will refill with new Dextron III and see how it does. It had some fine fillings in the filter and on the pan. Where does this O-ring go? It is about a 1/2 inch in diam.??

Some "grey" fluid is normal from the clutch plates.

REALLY, the O-Ring CAME ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND ENDED-UP IN THE PAN!! Where is it suppose to be positioned?? My Uncles GW leaks from the filler tube is it easy to put the O-ring back? How can I get it to stay??
