My instrument panel has fried again and all gauges (except the amp meter) have stopped working. I'm thinking about replacing all of the factory gauges with SW gauges but I don't want to drop the tank and change the sending unit. Has anybody been able to match a new fuel gauge with the existing Jeep sending unit? If so, what gauge and process?

I'll second that question....
Someone here just a few days ago had the same question regarding a gauge to match his sender. Try a search with "fuel gauge" in it within the last week.
Shouldn't be too hard to find a gauge. Just tell Autometer, VDO whatever what your senders resistance range is they need to match. The pre-86 senders are in a pretty common range. Even if you did have to put in a new sender you don't have to drop the tank on an 80+ Chero/Wag(yours an 81 Chero?), just remove the access cover on the floor from inside the Wag and you'll be looking right down on it.

Thanks Joe....I'll check for that panel!
The gauge below works for a 1980.

In 82 the Empty resistance changed from 73 to 61 ohms and I don't know which group an 81 would fall into. I also don't know how much or what difference/effect the 10 ohms make if you mixed and matched the gauge/senders?
The gauge linked above was the one from an earlier thread and I've never heard of the brand before. I personally like Autometer or VDO. SW used to make good gauges and maybe still do but the ones I've seen recently looked pretty cheesy.
