Does anyone know of a chain to gear conversion for the 1339 quadratrac unit???

Nope. I wouldn't worry about it. The case is actually beefy if taken care of properly. Replace the chain when it has too much slack, change the fluid twice a year, and it will live a good while. Mile Marker does make a part time kit for it, but no chain to gear conversions.

It runs $400-500. It replaces the differintial inside the QT with a drive sprocket for the chain. Then to place it in 4WD, just engage the E-Drive. A lot of people here have had good luck with it.

There's nothing wrong with the QT in stock form other than the chains wear out too fast. With the right fluid and a tight chain, they are very strong. Plus the fulltime 4WD feature is very effective (repeat very effective).

Certainly the part-time kit won't change the reliability of the case. You may get slightly better gas milage, but you'll have to drive a lot of miles (without FT 4WD) to get back your investment.

Much better places to spend your money IMO (such as aftermarket EFI).

It's debatable wether or not going from full time to part time 4x4 is going to help your fuel economy. I went from a TH400/QT to a T18/D20 in my 78 Cherokee, and much to my surprise, my gas consumption didn't change!

If that was my truck, I would get a new chain and replace the fluid in the recommended intervals. The QT will outlast the rest of the truck smile.gif

I have the part time kit in mine - I've NOT noticed any significant increase in mileage. I get about 10mpg currently...I think the main advantage to switching to P/T would be less wear on parts - I'd certainly NOT do it for the gas mileage.... :D

Just one comment on the "less wear on parts". If a regular QT splits the torque between the front and rear axles to propell the vehicle, both axles are suffering from the wear associated with half the regular amount of torque a rear axle would experience if that vehicle had a part time TC. That axle would be receiving ALL the torque from the TC and would wear faster smile.gif

Yes, I loved my QT smile.gif

Yes, I loved my QT smile.gif The front driveshaft won't turn, so it saves wear on the c.v. joint and u joint
However, the u joints at the front wheels won't be turning either, so they won't be binding and wearing out nearly as fast. Tires in the front will last longer, also.

I get about 10% better milage. I do have the 16% overdrive model, but I still get only about 9.5 to 10 mpg.

Jeepguzzi,
You have a point, but a pair of U-joints every 150K miles and some extra tire wear hardly justifies the part time kit. I know of a person who just removed his and his gas mileage remained the same.
My very biased $0.02 :D

I think i am going to just replace the chain....what kind of gear oil do i need to put back in and do i put it in the fill plug on the reduction unit or the one midways up the transfer case??

The correct fluid is Crown TCL-1, or Jeep Quadratrac Lubricant. Make sure you get a Morse chain and not a cheap imitation. I think Jeedoc.com is where everyone gets em. When refilling the case, you have to fill the reduction unit and the main case seperately.

First big blizzard of the season down there and you'll be wishing you had kept the full-time system. No doubt!

And as mentioned a stock QT needs the Special Secret Sauce. BJ's Ofrroad has it for $6/qt if you have trouble finding it local.

W/reduction unit it'll take a bit more than 2 qts so you'll need to buy 3.
