When I trow the switch on the dash for 4WD on my '87 GW I can feel that 4WD engages casue it dosn't slip in gravel as much and I can go into low range but the dash board indicator for 4WD does not ever light??

Could be a burned out bulb in the dash, or something wrong with the wires going to the switch on the bottom of the transfer case, or could be the switch on the transfer case. I would probably check the switch first, as it is the easiest to get to. Put it in 4wd, and then check for continuity through the switch.

Have you looked at the x-case to see if the wire/switch is hooked up?
A few of the 80-91 era years didn't have the 4WD mode lights. They had the place in the dash for them but no switch on the x-case. Don't remember what years though but I think it was in the earlier 80's than your 87?
