I currently have a 3 speed manual transmission on my 79 360 V8. I have no idea as to where the current transmission came from, since my Jeep was originally an automatic.

I would like to get a good 4 or 5 speed transmission for the Jeep, but I don't know which ones will work with my engine, etc. I was told that any transmission will work as long as the splines match up correctly.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good manual transmission?

Currently my Jeep runs at about 2500 RPM when doing 55 miles an hour which is killing my gas mileage. I can pull anyone out of trouble, because 1st is like a granny gear and hits 3000 RPM at only 10 miles and hour.

Thanks again for all your help!

Changing your tranny unless you go to an overdrive unit will not change your rpm or your mileage. 2500 rpm at 55 is not bad when you consider my wag is turning 3000 at 55. The FSJ is not an economy rig and never will be, with a 360, the most you can expect is about 13 to 15 mpg and this is in line with modern V8 SUV's of the same size and weight.

jeepbob. Thanks for your input. I have heard this from a couple other friends, but you guys on this Bulletin Board are the experts, and just like doctors, everyone likes a second opinion.

Again, thanks for all the help!
