Does anybody make housings for h4 bulbs?? I had them on my 68 karmann ghia and it was a night and day difference (no pun intended!), so who makes them??

don't know who makes them, but I got a set off ebay, they kick butt. punch in your current headlight part # into the search. I can't remember it right now, I think it's h6054

Hella makes them to replace the either the round or rectangular bulb.I too have a set off eBay(but with the H4 blue bulbs, not to impressed with them but then i didn't really take the time to mount them right=aiming and all).Make sure they are DOT approved housings.

I have them on my 73 240z and WOW! They are awesome compared to sealed beams or even halogens. When you wire them in, if you plan use a bigger bulb than say 90watts, put in a relay so the bulbs get full current. I plan to use the 100/130 when I get a chance.

Here is something I found one day while looking into HID upgrades. Not necessarily related to this post, but some interesting information.

I've added them to several older VWs over the years and wouldn't mind adding them to my J10 and Cherokee. A lot of VW shops have the housing and bulbs to convert to the H3, H4 or whatever your heart desires. You may find some localy if you check out the VeeDub shops.

I put H4 headlights in my wag. (Round). From Hella. I believe they have the correct rectangle ones too. If you do this, I would suggest doing the relay conversion (i used one from Painless wiring, it is for converting old cars to H4 headlights, and was really easy to install. Power, ground and plug one of the old headlight plugs into the loom, and run the wires.) This will allow you to get full power out of the H4s. The stock wiring doesnt have enough power to really get full benefit out of the H4s.

I have them and they are sweet...in my sig is picture of mine...got em off Ebay

the ones I have are a clear cut glass, ..where some i've seen (like the hella) are a regular front lense that isn't "see through" clear...its like a regular headlight front lense...
the ones i have really do a nice crisp beam, low and high.....
anyway they are sweet for $50

come with 90/110 bulbs also......

Thanks guys, i still have them on my v-dub i didn't know that all round bulbs are standardized! I'll just throw 'em on. I used the relay upgrade found in the tech section of this site.

Right.
All the older headlamps were pretty standard. 7" round, or 5" round(dual lamp systems), large rectangle or (dual lamp systems) small rectangles.

I'm running th Cibie H4 on the wag and Hella HB2 on the cuda. I like the Cibie's ever slightly better. The HB2 is a variation on the H4 and is interchangable. Its what Hella uses on their DOT marked lenses. If your state checks for marks, then get the Hella DOT housings. As far as I know, only NJ really cares, and a few other states kind of do.

Check out the website given above for lots of more info. Also some more on my website.
If you run standard H4 bulbs, they only draw 55/60W. Same as stock.

Check out JC Whitney for good prices on the Hella's. One of the few really good deals I can say I got with them.

I yanked em off my ghia and they work great.

I sell the lenses at work. APC makes a set. They're about 24 bucks each for the lenses. It is an exact replacement for the 6054 glass square stock lights. The H4 light is also numbered 9004 for a factory bulb. I use the 90/100 with a purple tint and they are Xenon bulbs. Strangely enough, the low beams actually look brighter than the high beam light. I've been told it has something to do with the "refractive light" reflector in the lens I use.

I have decided that I will ultimately be doing this upgrade. I will purchase the Painless Wiring Relay kit to make sure I get full power to the lights. But, I have a few questions:

1. Which is better, H4 or HB5, and what is the differences between them?
2. Who is running the HB5?
3. Which mfr. did you use for your lights?
4. Which bulbs are you using in your lights?
5. Anything you'd do differently now?

I put H4 headlamps in my 71J that I got from Eastwood company for 50 bucks...I miss not seeing at night and dodging deer.

I run H4 replacements in the CJ and the wag. 80/100's and love em. AVOID vision plus replacements!!! They are a neutered version of real H4 replacements. Get the real thing. Very precise lenses. Never do these mods without the relays. If you do, you might invest in some good side cutters and a fire extinguisher. Aim your drivers side a tad low and you will never get brighted. Enjoy...

Another thing is carry a spare set of 55/65's in the glove box. For some reason this last August I had both low beams blow on my CJ at the coast. Driving back on a curvy coastal highway at night with 100 watt high beams was fun when I had to turn them off for oncoming traffic. Carry cheap spares..

silly question, the 80/100 means 80 watt low beam, and 100 watt hi-beam?

Dudes. I love H4. They Rock. I use the Cibie rectangulars in my Wag.

When I had my Mazda truck I had the Cibie's in the headlights, 5 1/2 inch rounds next to them for driving(pencil beams), and 5 1/2 inch rounds on the bottom which were fogs. Total power in watts when all where on, 780 watts baby!! Youch. Can you say bright. I still have all the lights and just might put them on the wag only if I don't have to do any drilling.

HB5: what is it? What does it mean? What is the difference between it and H-4?

I've got the Sylvania Silverstars I think they're called and they look great. They're super white and really bright, they look much better than the stock halogens. I think I paid a little over $20 a piece for them.

Guys, last night I emailed an automotive lighting company, to get answers to a few questions. For those who are interested, here is the info:

> I do have a few questions, and I understand that the responses will be your opinion

That's good, but I have to warn you...my opinions on automotive lighting tend to have a very factual bias to them. ;^{)}

> I have a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (one of the big ones).

Neat vehicles. I know them fairly well.

> The stock lighting, well, sucks.

Yep, but it's easy to fix.

> I want to upgrade to H-4 lighting.

Yep, that's the first step...

> What all would you recommend I purchase from you for this
> modification?

Set of Bosch 200mm x 142mm H4 headlamps
Relay package
Set of high-efficiency bulbs (maybe a spare for the glovebox)

> Also, I have heard several people mention using HB5 bulbs. What are those?

9007, totally different bulb, not for this vehicle.

> What would you recommend? Is the H-4 the best choice for my application?

Yep.

> Is it cost effective?

If you like to see at night...yeah!

-----
I hope to do this conversion just after Christmas. I'll do a write-up on it for those who are interested.

That should include the 40/60 bulb. 55/60s are $5 each. Cepek relays HERE ( http://www.extremesuspensions.com/product.php?isbn=DCL00600&photo1ID=31&photo2ID=&liftID=12&seriesID=0&start_yearID=44&end_yearID=44&wheeldriveID=0&catid=1&liftID=12&install_id=&in stall_id2=&RECORD_KEY%28lightimages%29=isbn&isbn(lightimages)=DCL00600) are good too.

Great upgrade - had them on my CJs. Worth it.
