I think they they are refering to the carb bowl vent solenoid. I don't have my Haynes handy. If you look at the carb you will see a large hose coming from the front of the carb bowl going to a soleniod, which inturn leads to the charcoal cannister. When the key switch is turned on this solenoid is open to the charcoal cannister. The contents of the canister are emptied when the engine reaches proper operating temperature and a vacuum signal opens the canister to the PCV into the intake manifold getting rid of them by mixing them along with what is drawn though the carb. Haynes also has an excellent book on emissions systems. It is called of all things "Automotive Emission Controls", Haynes Thech Book #1667. I will explain all of the systems we have on our Jeeps. Well worth the 12 or so dollars it costs! ;)

You are opening up an evap solinoid. Here you are just checking the operation of the solinoid. They want you to take a jumper wire from battery positive and hook to the solinoid. When you do this the solinoid should open and you smell for gas fumes to make sure it is open. You may be able to feel the solinloid click. That would be more acurate than smelling for gas, unless you want to get light headed. smile.gif

After some further checking I have determined the function of the carb bowl solenoid. Upon turning the key on the solenoid is closed to ensure proper operation of the carb. When the engine is turned off the solenoid is open and vents the carb bowl to the charcoal canister for storage of vapors. ;)

I bought one from the dealer a few years back. The one I have now is defective, so I removed it and plugged the line going to the carb and charcoal canister temporarily. She seems to run fine until I can get another valve. ;)
