Hi all,
My 88GW wouldn't start this morning - dead battery. I immediately suspected the tailgate window. When I used it yesterday, it gave me problems (wouldn't work - then worked, etc.) Anywhoos, I jumped the Wag and was able to get the window down using the key switch on the tailgate but no dice when attempting to use the dash switch. Any ideas on the prob? Is there a fuse that I can pull to keep my battery from getting drained until I can change the window toa manual set up? How about disconecting some wires? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can open up the tailgate and pull the connector off the motor. In your case this must be done while the tailgate is closed and the window is in the fully up position.

To answer a possible counter question.....

No, your window will not slide down if the motor is simply unplugged.

If it were my Jeep, I would fix the problem with the motorand maintain the electric set-up.

It is highly likely that the problem is a wiring one and not the motor. The wires often get pinched and worn through at the point where they enter the tailgate. That's where I'd check first. Also, check all your wires with reference to ground for both voltage and resistance. You could have a grounding issue.

Your tailgate motor problem could also ba completely unrelated to another electrical problem but just happens to be surfacing at the same time.

Another motor operation inhibitor to check is the tailgate safety switch located on the upper drivers side of the tailgate. Remove the switch and do all continuity checks you can to determine that the switch is functioning.

Good Luck.
