Not another steering box question.....

My mechanic (who only works on Jeeps) said he doesn't like to rebuild steering boxes because he said it's likely that there is a groove worn in the shaft (or somewhere) and it will leak again after the new seal.

Is that right? It seems that a lot of people rebuild their boxes. He wants $400 for a new box.

This can be the case.... I have had one box that was 'apple core' and would not seal.

This would be a leak at the top of the box where the steering linkage connects.

Plus... if you have never done it... you can actually do more harm than good by not setting the pre-load correctly.... been there, done that.

age and wear play a big part in this... you may not know until you rip it apart.
