OK do you have to replace the track bar with a lift kit or are they adjustable? i was at rustys site and they suggested a new bar for more than a 2" lift on XJ's. what about SJ's?

Alot of people just remove them. They are less critical with leaf springs than with coils. They are not adjustable in stock form thus need to be modified.

Hey, Kerry, we missed you down in San Diego the other night, wish you could have been there.

reddog is completely correct. Trac bars are critical to locating the front axle on coil spring equipped rigs. On leaf sprung vehicles, however, they are not so important.
I say lift that bad boy and rip off the trac bar and sway bar!

It predated the Chrysler takeover (they had them in '85 or '86). They certainly help on-the-road handling; my '88 handles like a Porsche compared to my '78.

are we talking track bars (keeps axle from having side to side movement) or sway bars (keeps body from rolling around turns)

If you want to keep the track bars this worked well for me when I put a 3" suspension lift on the GW. After trying to finagle the rear track bar back in (not happening) I cut it in half near the middle, threaded both ends with a 1" die and used a 1" pipe coupling to put it back together. This gave me both the add'l length and the ability to twist it to fit back in the brackets. Didn't have to do any mods to the front. No track bar brackets with the 79 axles I have under there now but keeping the sway bar and upgrading to greasable poly bushings. Too much highway to get to the fun stuff not to. Maybe some disconnects in the future though. :D
